285’s and MPG?
Hey All,

I’m new to the 4Runner world. Just picked up a ‘20 Venture and currently gathering everything for a lift (going with King 2.5’s front and back, SPC UCAs and 2” Icon coils in the rear). I’m planning on either 285/70s or 285/75s on the stock TRD wheels.

With this being my daily driver, I’d like to find the best tire option to maximize mpg. Was wondering if anyone running a lift and 285’s can offer any recommendations on which tires I should look at.

Wants to maximize mpg.

Does everything possible to minimize mpg.

Leave it stock if you care about mileage.

Depending on your tire choice and driving habits, post mods you can see mpgs in the 14-16 range.

ATs would be your best bet for an extra 0.5-1 mpg over MTs.

285 nitto all terrains. get about 16 around town, can touch 20 hwy

Find a C-Load all terrain in that size like a BFG KO2. Theyre much lighter than an E load. Otherwise, not much else you can do.

I went with what is perhaps the most common pick... 285/70/17 BF Goodrich K02 C rated all terrains. I have them on TRD pro wheels with SPC UCAs. I wanted to keep the unsprung weight down. So far (5 months) I have been very happy. It drives great

13-14 mpg highway, I think you bought the wrong vehicle if you care about gas mileage.

I threw 285s on a couple of weeks ago. Since then, I've watched my long-maintained average of 16.5 MPG drop like a stone.

I'm probably getting ~15 MPG now. But I've got a fair amount of constant weight too.

MPG will go down, nothing you can do. The key is to accept that going in.

I'm simply looking for recommendations on types of 285 tires that will yield better mpg than others. I realize that I'm not going to get good mpg with my vehicle choice, but I don't see anything wrong with trying to get the best mpg that I can given my desired set up.

There's a lot of variables in that. A less aggressive tire would do best for mpg. A MT probably not so much.

I get 15-16 on 285/75's FWIW.

Thanks for the insight. I figured the KO2's would be on the lower side of the spectrum due to their weight. I really like the way they look though. Any idea what your mpg is?

I think the hidden answer here is that your MPG will suck no matter what. If guys on here are running 285s or bigger, then gas mileage isn't a primary concern for them. And they're almost definitely running an AT or MT. So you're asking a question that doesn't have a great answer, because most people are like me and will say "MPG sucks, but oh well".

I think you'll save more money by finding a good deal on tires than you will hunting for a tire that gives you .01 more MPG.

Yep, I understand. I probably should have clarified that I'm only considering ATs. What I haven't really figured out yet from the research that I've done is what rating and type of sidewall is better for maximizing mpg. I won't be doing much off-roading simply because I live in one of the flattest states in the country (Nebraska) and there really aren't any trails nearby.

E Rated.

16.2 combined sea level, 14.1 combined in the mountains.

Icon 3" lift and only added weight are RCI sliders.

I agree with what @ryguytheman said about a well priced tire.

I would consider the KO2 to be on the more aggressive side of the AT tire spectrum. You said you won't be off roading much, KO2's aren't especially good in the snow, I assume you're buying it for the looks then?
