Out of curiosity - any experience from those that upgraded to the TRD Cold Air Intake, on how it changed the engine's sound?

My question is directed to anybody with a noisy engine who has the capability to do a professional level scan of live and stored data. I'm also asking if anyone eliminated noise using 5W30.

Scan data yeah that’s super important to those that don’t know how to interpret it.

Scotty is a clown, there’s so much misinformation on his channel. Just because he says it doesn’t make sense doesn’t make it law, that old 4Runner in his video has completely different internals than the 1GR. Anything “knocking” that bad since day one as he claims would’ve put a hole through the block in less that one thousand miles. I’m at 60k now and it’s been doing that since day one, go buy a Hyundai if you really want to experience engine knock.

I mostly hear the fan.
Overall it sounds just like the 2nd gen Tacoma I had before it. Its way less noisy than my little 1.1l Aprilia with an akrapovic pipe.

I'm currently using 5w-30 and it does seem quieter; although I have zero evidence other than what I hear.
Since our engines are spcecified for up to 20w-50 outside the US, I'll be trying some 40 grade oil in a bit, and hopefully will remember to come back and post up how that compares.

Oil viscosity should have nothing to do with loudness. I like noisy fan at the start up because it sounds mean. Valvetrain noise is hard to get used to because it seems too random and diesel like.

I've never done it on my 4Runner because I've never been concerned, it's loud and makes noise no doubt. But if I was curious about it, I'd just listen to the injectors or the valve cover areas with a screwdriver to the ear to isolate where it's coming from, it would be obvious.

Save the trouble.
The 1GF RE has a lot of valve train noise. Steel chains, running 4 cams, hydraulic lash adjusters, and 4 valves per cylinder . It also, has the variable cam timing solenoids doing their thing too.
Playing around with engine oil weights MAY help quiet the valve train, but it will do nothing to silence it.

Toyota's 1GR FE in the 4Runner does not have direct injection. It has port injection.

I stand corrected, I mis read my source material that stated the engine has "direct ignition" (coil on plug)
My brain read that as direct injection.
Thanks for catching the error!
None the less, they are still noisy.

I agree totally, but I was just stating (maybe the obvious), that if you have concern that it's a quick way to understand if something is awry with a certain component.
With these motors, I have very little concern myself, for better or worse they do make some noise

I’m running 5w-30. No noticeable difference in sound (or MPG or performance).
This V6 does not make a beautiful noise but hopefully it will do it for a long time.
All you guys must have short memories of previous rides. My 80’s VWs would shake so bad at idle you could not see out the rear view mirror. I bought a Honda as my next car and was eternally grateful it had a starter lockout when the motor was running because it was so smooth and quiet in comparison that I kept trying to restart it.

Pretty sure this is the same motor that is in the 4th gen as well. Before I knew they were just noisy, I took it to 3 different shops figuring SOMETHING was wrong. Lifter click, noisy injectors, valve train problem... Nah. They are just noisy.
My new to me '18 sounds like a god damn diesel when it is cold.
I guess I'll just get used to it. It is alarming as a new owner.

FJC, 2nd Gen Taco, 4th Gen 4Runner, 5th Gen 4Runner.
The 5th Gen 4Runner gets the most powerful version.

Before my 2014 Trail, I had a 2002 Taco with a 3rz in it. That thing would knock like crazy on a cold start. I sold it with 220,000 on it and I still see it in town today. I really have no noise complaints with the 4.0L in the 4runner.
