My new to me '18 sounds like a god damn diesel when it is cold.

I guess I'll just get used to it. It is alarming as a new owner.
The Single VVT-i 1GR-FE in the 4th gens, is almost entirely different from the Dual VVT-i 1GR-FE in the 5th gens.

The Dual VVT-i 1GR-FE has a different block, crankshaft, pistons, cylinder heads, intake and exhaust manifolds, etc.

I will say that the oil used does affect how loud the engine sounds at idle. I just recently switched from Mobil 1 "Fuel Economy" to Valvoline High Mileage w/ Max Life and the engine is noticeably quieter at idle.

They are two different viscosities. The Valvoline is 10W-40 and the Mobil 1 is 0W-20, and synthetic to boot. A thicker oil will always make an engine quieter.

You only need to change to a higher viscosity if your engine is using oil. Also, the difference between normal oil and a "high mileage" oil is additives to soften seals than may have become hard, and thus may leak.

Synthetic oils lubricate better and last longer than regular (mineral) oil. Thus, the oil change interval for synthetic oil is twice a long as for mineral oil.

I think you made an assumption there... the Valvoline I am using is 0w20.

Thicker oils may quieten an engine, but digging deep I've seen that they can cause issues with the vVTi system in these engines.

While I won't give 2 cents for their dealership service depts. - I will give Toyota engineers the nod for their oil recommendation - in this case - 0W-20.

I was concerned about this too but was comforted by the wide range of viscosities approved for this engine in other markets. And it seems to work well for me.

Exactly...our same engines are specified to use up to 20w-50 in other parts of the world.

I'm currently running 5w-30 and have some 15w-40 waiting in the wings for summer use. Planning to do a UOA (Used Oil Analysis) and see how these different grade oils affect wear.

Not so. I specifically looked up "Valvoline High Mileage w/ Max Life" on the Valvoline web site and it stated clearly that it was 10W-40. Valvoline does make a synthetic oil but it is not Valvoline High Mileage w/ Max Life.

Valvoline does make a High Mileage w/ Max Life Full Synthetic in 0w20....

I would worry if my engine stopped making noise. I've found that my engine gets louder somewhere between 5000 and 7500 miles post oil change, so I change mine every 5k or so. I also noticed different brands (I've tried a ton of them) all vary in length from oil change to noticeably louder engine. For instance, Pennzoil for me got louder around 3500 miles.

After my period of trying different oils for the hell of it, I ended up going back to Toyota oil OEM and was able to get the dealer to sell it to me for the same price as M1 at wally world. Also, they always give me the crush washer free with the oil filter. These were my observations.

Oil doesn't make engine less noisy. You can't be serious suggesting that it does. Maybe solid lifters and cam chains might something to do with it? It sounds harsh from day one and you can't fix something that isn't broken. Changing viscosity of oil may be a bad idea if oil channels and bearing tolerances were designed for 0W20.

Another $0.02 post...

I noticed the engine noise when I first got my 4Runner back in February, but didn't think too much of it because it honestly sounded what I imagined a V6 version of the 5.0 Mustang I had just traded in would sound like. Both the 1GR-FE and the Coyote motor are DOHC, 4v, with twin independent cam/valve timing; they have noisy valvetrains. If it suddenly stopped sounding the way it did, or started throwing a knock code, I'd be worried. If/until then, I'll just pretend I have a little diesel and have fun with it.

NAPA 0W-20 is Valvoline and is much much cheaper.
