1GR-FE typically a noisey motor?

I've had two 1GR-FE's and they both seem loud to me, sounds like valve train noise, but most will probably say its fuel injectors. Definitely more pronounced when cold and higher RPM's.

Anyone have any insight.... is this a "noisey" engine? Is the noise mostly from injectors or does this engine have a normal amount (normal = loud engine) of valve train noise?

TIA
Dave

Yes. Both in the 4Runner and FJ Cruiser flavors.

Yes, the 3.4 made valve noise too. Its the sound of 300,000 miles. The additives in Toyota/Lexus oil may help. I'm using 5 quarts Mobil 1 and 1.5 qts of Lexus oil. It may be a little quieter? IDK if its the valve train or the injectors or something else. Do you have an insulated hood? Some 4runners have insulation under the hood.

When I first bought mine I had the same question: "Is my engine supposed to be this noisy? It sounds like a god damn diesel sometimes!"

All is normal friend: Engine noise sounds like diesel at idle

My gear head friend says the injectors are noisy on them. I do think part of it is valvetrain noise though and mine is noisier when cold.

What kind of noise? If it is a soft clicking noise (sounds like a diesel engine), then it is the valves/lifters. If it is whirring noise, it is the cam shaft chains. Toyota is one of the few cars that use a chain for the cam shafts, unlike the rubber belts others use.

If either noise is soft, that is normal. I've never heard of fuel injectors making noise.

I wonder if that is carry-over from comments made at tacomaworld.com
Some people over there claim the single VVT-i engine noises originate from the fuel injectors.

In my opinion, if that's true, then someone has some really good hearing.

Whatever.

Scotty is a pretty bright guy but definitely skeptical of every car manufacturer on the planet!

My last two 05 4.0 Tacomas were noisy especially when cold and my 4Runner is a bit noisier. Coming out of my development in the morning uphill it actually sounds pretty bad. However I have never heard a 5th gen that sounded any different and there are lots of them out there with well over 200k miles going strong. Mine hasn't hit 80k yet.

Mine has been called a UPS truck.

My California neighbors had complained to me about my “modified exhaust” and I told them it’s 100% stock, then another neighbor bought one and his is just as loud.

My FJC was just as bad.

Has anyone scanned their noisy vehicle and found anything?

Has anyone changed from 0W20 to 5W30 and eliminated the noise?

Scotty is a sperg who throws out unsubstantiated bullshit on his channel for clicks.

The fact he hasn’t been sued by car manufacturers for his ridiculous claims just shows you nobody takes him seriously.

I'm not talking about Scotty's character! I'm talking about the scan data! What is your diagnosis for those readings? What would you say about the fuel trims and incomplete data?

My question is directed to anybody with a noisy engine who has the capability to do a professional level scan of live and stored data. I'm also asking if anyone eliminated noise using 5W30.
