storing summer tires

After screeching my stock DuraSlips a couple of times, I decided that winter tires were a good idea and bought some Micheline iX2 (or whatever).

Unfortunately I didn't think about storage. I'd planned to put them in my barn but it does get to -40 F here (that's 40 below 0 gentleman) and I've read that's a bad idea.

So
- somehow store them inside, in my attic, where it never gets below freezing?
- store them in the garage, where it might get as low as 0 (zero) F?

I'll switch them out in early May, when our snow season is up.

Thx

We usually get a few weeks of -30C (that would be -22F in USA) here in Canada and my stock Bridgestone Duelers are put into large plastic bags and then stored in my unheated garage. I got the large plastic bags from Toyota dealership where I got my winter tires installed. They gave back my "summer" tires in these bags so I'm just reusing them whenever I swap out my tires. It seems to work for me and I think it would be okay for your -40F temperatures too... no need to keep tires warm over the winter. Just make sure you tie up the plastic bags tight so nothing gets in when they're in storage.

I guess having said that, what information did you find that may be a reason to not store tires in the cold? Would that affect people who only have one set of tires on their vehicle year-round?

My summer tires on my e30 m3 are 10 years old and are brand new looking and pliable
All my summer tires get the same treatment air up to at least 45psi large lawn garbage bags and stored off the floor on wood skids in an unheated garage away from any sunlight

storing summer tires

I’ve stored my summer wheels/tires in my shed outside for the past 5 years without issue and we see a few days at -35C during the winter.

Mind you, we’re not at these temperatures for weeks on end, but I wouldn’t worry about it too much. If you have room in the garage pr basement it can’t hurt to keep them at a higher temperature.

What have you read exactly? And perhaps contacting the tire manufacturer directly and asking if storing at low temps is an issue could help you figure it out! I can see driving around at these temps cracking or chunking the rubber, but storing?

How to correctly store tires? | Continental tires

"In cold weather or in warm, tires should never be stored in the open air, even under a protective covering. Think cool, dry, moderately ventilated – and of course out of the sun. Your basement or another climate-controlled space is ideal. If there is a heat source in the room, the tires must be shielded from it. Most garages, sheds and attics undergo a range of temperatures, precipitation and humidity. You want to avoid these fluctuations."

michelin says:
Tire Storage | Michelin
"If you are storing outdoors (recommended for a short time only), raise tires off the ground and use waterproof covering with holes to prevent moisture build-up."

I think the garage is fine. I leave my BMW motorcycle there unmoved for 6 months. Now to find room.

Hmm. The tires on my car get subject to rain, heat, sun, cold, snow, ice 24*7 all year round and they last many years despite being stored in open air.

I think the Continental advice is pretty extreme. I lived in Edmonton for a long time and stored summer tires in the garage (not in bags) in the winter and it was fine. And it gets pretty darn cold in Edmonton in Jan and Feb.

Tires shops store them on racks, in unheated warehouses. (don't believe for a second all those things are temp controlled, no one could afford the utility bill)
Just stick them in the garage.
It can't be any worse than leaving them on the T4R.

I think tire deterioration has more to do with temperature change and ozone/weather fluctuations
