The new OEM air filter...

I believe it's been discussed before but apparently our OEM air filter, p/n 17801-38051, has been superseded. That's what the dealer that I order all of my parts through told me when I ordered one. The new p/n is 17801-YZZ13 and that's what I was given. The pleated portion is about half the depth as the old filter and the foam pre-filter is gone.

I'm sure it will work just fine but I don't like.

Pic for reference:

Update - I got one of the Denso filters, p/n 143-3025. Dimension wise it is the same as the OEM filter. It includes a foam pre-filter that is very slightly thinner than the one on the OEM filter. It also feels a little softer and not as coarse.

The Denso filter looked like it didn't have as many filter pleats so I counted them on all 3 filters.

OEM - 109 pleats
New OEM - 131 pleats
Denso - 98 pleats

So the new OEM filter is not as thick but it has quite a few more pleats but my guess is it still doesn't equal the same surface area as the original OEM filter. I doubt it even has the same surface area as the Denso filter. Again, I'm sure it will work fine. Me personally, if I can't get my hands on one of the original OEM filters then I will most likely use the Denso filter.

My guess is the new one is better. The new one seems to have the profile of the TRD filter. I wonder if that's why the 4Runner TRD filter was discontinued? Part redundancy?

If I had to guess I'd say it was due to supply chain issues. When I ordered the original p/n the dealer told me about the new superseded part and that it was on a 3-6 week national back order. Less material so they can make more to stretch the supply out. My theory anyway but who knows.

They likely superseded the part number because too many people were *****ing about how they got half a filter in the normal filter box.

I remember when we started getting these "new" EAFs and I was like, "uh... big box for tiny filter."

My guess is supply chain issues, we've seen a lot of the engine air filters and cabin air filters get "superseded" with slightly thinner versions...

Same reason a Hershey bar is half the size it used to be for the same price. Another way for all $ to move to the top 1%.

I like the "pre-filter" I took mine off the old one, rinsed it off and hot-glued it to the new filter. Keeps the big things from getting into the pleats. But, as long as you change your filter when it gets old and dirty, you should be fine either way. I'm on filter #3 with 105k after 12 years. Of course the conditions you drive in makes a big difference.

Where are you located? I had a dealership in Georgia swear these were superceded and could not be ordered but then called a dealership in California and they shipped them out same day. Could it be a TMS/SET/GST difference?

It's not. Here's the thing. Toyota has a budget line of parts, and often dealers push these because there is a higher profit margin.

Anything with the YZZ in the name is a budget lower quality item.

They plain sold this person a budget item and probably charged full price for it too. $$ in the dealers pocket.

It was $15.38. I was told the original p/n is no longer available.

Also, what about the OEM oil filters? I have multiple Toyotas in my household each using different different oil filters but they are all YZZ part numbers. As far as I know other than the TRD filter there is no other oil filter available.

I have since found out that Denso makes one too, p/n 143-3025. I will probably just get that one in the future if the original OEM p/n is indeed no longer available.

Everything YZZ is a budget/value item, lower quality. You can just search for "toyota yzz" and find plenty of information on it.

As far as the Toyota supply chain right now I have no idea, I just bought the normal filter a few weeks ago along with some TRD oil filters from my local dealer. Looking at toyota parts online right now, it shows the normal and the budget filter as not available

Also fwiw I have also used amsoil and royal purple oil filters and cannot tell them apart from the TRD oil filter side by side other than the TRD stamp, they are basically identical.
