4runner ORP vs GX460
Hi,
Im choosing between a new ORP and a new GX 460. I may be able to get a new GX460 Premium for around $48,000 +TTL.
Most of my driving will be highway cruising, maybe occasional offroading, nothing serious, mostly dirt road or forest road.
what do you guys think would be a better vehicle, GX at $48,000, or ORP at around invoice?
Thanks!

GX. Not a close call. If highway cruising and only mild off-road use is the goal, GX is a much better choice.

Just went through this debate myself, test drove both multiple times and ended up with a 2021 TRD Off Road Premium w/KDSS.
The interior of the Lexus, IMO, just felt too outdated for that price point. The new 2021 updates (TSS, LED's, etc) made the 4runner much more compelling to me.
Also, our driveway forces us to park tandem, and that rear door on the GX was going to be slightly inconvenient for our specific situation...something to consider.

GX is better in every way, but damn ugly and the updated version available worldwide isn't available in the US.
I have driven one recently in Japan and would buy it if it became the 6th gen 4Runner.

If for the same price and no serious off roading, then the Lexus. Since both are made by Toyota, the reliability will be great.
But if you ever plan on doing serious off roading, then the 4Runner would be better.

If I was starting over then I'd get a GX460 for sure. 4Runner costs are increasing and discounts are not what they were 2-3 years ago. Conversely the GX460's can be had for a great price with significant discounts. Likewise when I was buying the GX460 aftermarket was nil and it has exploded in the recent year.

I, too, wrestled with this and ultimately chose the 4Runner.
At face value, if you can afford the price difference, the GX seems like a no brainer. However, going a little deeper on three things sent me back to the 4Runner:
- GX's non-removable third row that eats into cargo space. I'm single, so I don't need 3 rows and prefer the cargo space.
- No roll-down rear window on the GX. It's just one of those 4Runner features I love and don't want to give up.
- The GX's swing out rear door vs. 4Runner's pop up rear hatch. The 4Runner's hatch is just much easier to live with day to day and in tight parking situations.
... The 4Runner Limited is kind of the middle ground between a 4Runner ORP and GX 460. Just a thought.
No bad or wrong decisions though. Good luck!

We have a 2014 Limited TR4 and a 2019 GX460 Premium and we prefer the GX especially for the V8.
They are both so very similar in many ways (even the rear armrest is identical) but the GX is more comfy to drive has better head room and has way better pull around town with the bigger engine. If it were me, owning both, I would get the GX. No need for all the options of the Luxury model GX, most Premiums have plenty of options to make it comparable to the Limited TR4 and can be had for pretty reasonable prices, we paid 45.5k for our 2019 this past September.
I will say though, the GX looks absolutely silly with the stock size tires, i pulled off the ones that came with it for 275/65R18's and it looks much more

Swing out door was the deal breaker. I hated it on my FJ.

I do agree, the swing out is a little annoying living in the City, but you can pop the hatch and that makes up for 80-90% of not liking the swing out door.

Keep in mind, if gas mileage is a concern, that the GX mileage is even worse than the 4Runner. And they haven’t even updated the infotainment in the Lexus. How does the 4Runner now have Apple CarPlay and yet you still can’t get it in the GX?

Sadly - the real answer to the question is a v8 4Runner. That's what a lot of us really want. The 4Runner offroad goodies and utility that the GX trades for luxury, but the v8 engine. The peak power doesn't tell the story very well. You kinda need a turbo to get the same power out of a v6 at 1500-2500 rpms. But I'm sure the SC still makes a huge improvement too.
This isn't the current 1GR or 4.6L, but you can see the difference in mid-range power and how much more the v8 has compared to the v6 even if the peak power isn't that different.
