I just got my skid in the mail today.. Too anxious to get it on.. I might temporarily install it with the stock rear bolts and go the stud route sometime in the near future (first oil change?)

So here is how I did it after careful measuring ordering items. Items were ordered from McMaster and Belmetric.
The shortest studs were in the rear and I had to make the fronts with 70mm bolts cut to total length of 2 5/8 to bottom out in the forward radiator location. I used blue loctite.
Do not over tighten the rears once you shoulder the stud. Stainless Belleville washers and stainless acorn nuts were used.

I may do one in the near future.....
one could go a different route I believe on the rear studs.....
I think the 70mm bolts could come in from the top of the threaded part. With a backing nut on the bolt, one could adjust to length and tighten nut, and the bolt would be locked in place.....

I look forward to it. I swung through ACE today and ending up buying the plug tap. So I’ll do it right from the get go. But the stud idea seems ideal for ease of on/off. TRD Pro Skid Plate & Oil Changes

Looks like my driver side front upper bolt with spacer is stripped, best way to fix? I can get the new bolt kit from Toyota, someone mentioned a part number but how do I fix the thread? I would like to use the stock bolts. Helicoil? And how is this done? Any input appreciated. Thank you.

Unfortunately, my fix to that exact issue was to just buy a RCI skid instead of the TRD plate.

1) I've read that when putting the skid back on, running a tap with cutting oil helps prevent eventual stripping of the bolt due to "gunk" build up. But do you then need to clean the oil out of the nut so that the bolt isn't prone to coming loose? How does one go about that?

2) The skid is a lot easier to bolt/un-bolt when it's held up by something tight to the vehicle. Has anyone got a good solution for that? I've been using makeshift stuff like blocks of wood, but I'm sure others have a better plan.

Thanks!

I use my floor jack to hold un the skid plate while I am tightening it up.

I know you could take 1 of the bolts to the hardware store or automotive store and match it up. Usually running a tap through will be enuf to clean up the threads.

Man, I had no idea putting these TRD skid plates on and off is such a hassle We've owned our 4Runner with this plate for nearly 4 years and haven't any issues with the bolts. They thread in nicely every time. I sit on my creeper and use my knee to hold and align the plate in place, line up the back holes and thread in the bolts 1/2 way in and then push the front of the plate up and find the two front holes and thread those bolts 1/2 way in. Then run the bolts down to snug and torque to maybe 25-30 ft/lbs. They don't need to be that tight as the only thing the bolts are doing is holding the plate on and four 14mm bolts holding a 20lb plate on don't require much torque.

Yeah it’s beyond that, overtightened by the dealer. So wondering what is the best fix, Helicoil or Riv Nut, nut sert, but that seems hard to find in 10X1.25, whereas that is available in a Helicoil. Thanks everyone.

Spec is 22 ft lbs.
