But yes, the limited has the option to unlock the center diff, which makes it like any other AWD vehicle and operates on-road or high traction surfaces just fine.

Locked center and it operates just like the rest of the 5th gen lineup in 4WD.

Clarification by the OP in the beginning would have been more productive.
Yes, sorry about that! I didn't realize that in this case SR5 vs Limited was important to differentiate!

Lets be realistic … its more like 55F to 85F before the freak-out ensues.

What’s a “tune up”? Definitely not gonna get optimal mileage if driving around in “HD”, that’s the worst one of all to be in. Make sure you press the eco button over and over to unlock super MPGs.

Ok. Misunderstood your 4wd knob markings.

man i had high expectations for the comments in this thread. you guys are all too nice suddenly.

OP- when in 2wd the front diff and axles are still spinning so youre still dealing with that added resistance. although i'd expect 16-17 mpg outta stock 4runner, if not better. i think ours averaged 18 stock.

I have wondered if there's another issue going on--I agree with you!
Sorry but if you are dividing the miles you drove by the fuel tank's maximum capacity, you are doing it wrong.

You should divide how far you drove by the amount of fuel you put in to fill the tank. No WONDER you're getting only 14 mpg; your method of calculation is making it look like you are using a lot more fuel.

My 4R has at least 4 gallons left in the tank when the light comes on. That means only 19 gallons were used. In your example above that would result in almost 16 mpg, where your incorrect calculation using the whole tank is just over 13.

As far as the 4wd, !! Part time is NOT to be used on dry hard pavement! If it is dry pavement then 2wd is all you will ever need. 4wd is for slippery surfaces only.

Since you are new to p/t 4wd, go find a gravel road to exercise the 4wd.

My '15 Trail gets 14 mpg between city and highway driving in NYC.

Easy: donít engage 4H/4L on dry pavement.

You must be smashing the gas at every light.

Iíve got 250lbs of bumper and armor, 285ís, lift, etc and average 17mpg.
