Shrockworks - slider install notes (KDSS)

I couldn't find a recent thread troubleshooting the install for these sliders w/ KDSS, so typing this up for anyone doing so in the future. I get the sense that the frame holes vary by year of 5th gen - this is for a '21 ORP. The sliders are the 'angled up' (30 degrees) version, with 'textured' powder coat.

Trail4r did a great write up (non-KDSS) here and there is a youtube here (non-KDSS). I used this for my install. Take the instructions from shrockworks and put them in the trash.

Driver Side:
The driver side did not require any drilling.
  • It's a one-person job if you place the slider on two jack stands.
  • Use wooden shims to get the lines away from the frame
  • I put my bottlejack under the gas tank after removing the skid/strap, but this was not needed. For me, on an empty tank, the tank didn't seem to lower at all. Putting the gas tank bolt back in with the slider however, was a pain - might have been easier to just remove the entire gas tank skid.
  • The plastic plug you need to remove to install the stick nuts is covered by the lines. The lines hardly budge - so shims made this possible. The plug only came out if I lifted from above, as the lines don't allow any space to remove it if pulling down.
  • Sprayed the stick nuts with rustoleum. I didn't find they were hard to use, with one exception...
  • The nightmare of this whole install (and reason for this post) was the back top bolt, on the driver side. The provided bolt just wasn't long enough to thread into a sticknut as the 1) washer, 2) locking washer, 3) angled bracket, 4) slider, and 5) frame - were just too many things for the bolt to pass through. I spent maddening hours on this bolt - until I realized that there just wasn't enough thread for the stick nut. I removed the locking washer and it worked on first try. Shrockworks should include a longer bolt here, and if I had known I would have picked one up @ the hardware store before I started.

  • The lines that go through this bracket - SW includes a zip tie to avoid rubbing with the slider, but I don't see how that would accomplish anything. I still need to find something to prevent rubbing here.

Passenger side:
Only one bolt had to be drilled, on the front bottom slider. (The silver one, in this picture)
  • You're essentially drilling here for the passenger side to be identical to the driver side, which comes from the factory with a hole right there.
  • Passenger side didn't have the tight spaces from the KDSS lines, or the gas tank, and was overall much easier. Entire passenger side was complete in less than an hour.
  • Stick nuts were a bit harder to stuff back into the frame.
  • Just like inside the 'bracket' on the driver side, I'm still looking for a solution to prevent the rubbing of this line. The bracket is about 1/4" taller than the frame here, so now the line lightly rests on the slider. Any input appreciated - I think I read in another slider install that people were cutting a strip of fuel line as a cover?

Great write up, looks great. I’ve been meaning to order sliders and a bumper since they’re local to me. (Save on shipping)
An old trick I learned to prevent rubbing is to cut a rubber hose lengthwise and wrap it around what you’re trying to protect. Maybe add a ziptie(s) as well.

Great write up and love the look. Curious to know if they could be utilized as steps as well? Or are they too close to the body?

I have the same ones on my Pro. Non KDSS. I wanted the least noticeable most tucked in true slider out there. My wife who is 5’3” and my 6 year old use them to get in all the time. I have a size 13 foot and I am able to get the ball of my foot on them to wipe the roof. I am 6’3” and don’t use them for getting in and out. Love the clean look of them.

Thanks for the insight and nice rig. We pretty much have the same family description so your response on how your family uses them couldn’t be anymore perfect! I do love the look as well but want my wife and son to be able to get in a bit easier.

Thanks - now I just need to find some hose and get around to it.

*I can use it as a step but I'm on the taller side and its not a need. If in need of a step for family - I would recommend the option with the tread plate or another slider. Took two photos if that helps - bottom photo is the rear door, measured where it starts to narrow. Tread plate or a slider w/ a kickout might be easier to step on.

Putting the gas tank bolt back in with the slider however, was a pain - might have been easier to just remove the entire gas tank skid.

The install on this was actually much more easy than I had expected! I just put mine on and gotta say, you saved my bacon man! I read your post after putting the passenger side on and literally my next step was the top rear bolt. I guarantee that I would have fought with that thing forever had you not mentioned taking off the lock washer.

A trick that worked well on the gas tank strap bolt…I struggled with this for a bit too because once you drop the tank it’s impossible to get the hole of the tank strap lined up with the hole in the slider. Then it dawned on me to scoot the slider to line up with the tank strap hole and put the bolt through both, then slide it back to the proper alignment. This is counterintuitive because you’re talking the slider out of alignment to do it, but when you have the bother through both the tank strip will slide real easily back into place. Do this step before placing any other hardware so that the slider moves freely.

I have KDSS so I can’t thank you enough for your post that saved me a couple of headaches! Pictures below. I really wanted the RSG sliders but couldn’t justify how much more expensive they were. I’m super happy with these sliders and really the install was much easier than I had expected and they look gnarly!

Oh, also, I am 5’10”, my wife is 5’2” (on a good day!) and these work great as a step. I purchased the angled, textured powder coat, with the tread plates and kick out. The tread plates are definitely worth the extra.
