285 spare tire location with KDSS
I'm looking for the best possible solution to carry a spare in the factory location after upgrading to 285/70/17 KO2s. I did a 285/70 test fit in the spare location and couldn't get it to fit due to the rear KDSS sway bar.
I have been researching this for a while now on these forums, so I know that a 285 does fit for owners without KDSS. I also know that a 275 will fit with KDSS.
Has anyone with KDSS figured out a solution that doesn't involve a rear or roof mounted spare?
Possible options:
1. Air down the 285 spare.
How much would a 285/70 need to be aired down to squeeze in? How much buffer should remain between the KDSS sway bar and the spare? I know it only moves up and down, but I figure a safe tolerance should be considered to make sure objects don't get stuck between.
2. Split the difference with a 275 spare.
Could I use a 275 as the spare? I know traction control could behave oddly with a size mismatch, but the difference is minimal between 275 and 285. Has anyone else done this with success?
3. Slightly cut some of the frame/support on the rear bumper side to make room for the 285.
Not super keen to do this, but it looks like a viable solution. Has anyone done this yet?
Thanks in advance.

If you aren't going to swap it into rotation and "As long as it is just temporary, there won't be any devastating results."
and "From the information I have gathered (independently) as well as talking to a Toyota technician, the consensus is the 4R's Torsen center diff and computer has a tolerance of 3% of tire difference from front to rear."
then why not just go with the smaller tire vs any modification?
Also its weight savings for those MPG gains. LoL

Not sure how I missed these, thanks! I would much prefer to keep what I have. If anything I would try to source an aluminum spare to shave some additional weight over the stock steel w/ factory full size 265/70 tire.

I have a 285/70/R17 in the factory location with no issue at all. I actually have a bit of room to spare. It's not aired down and yes, I do have KDSS.

I have KDSS and a 285/70R17 spare in the stock spare place. It's a falken wildpeak at3w which is 33" but it fits. I did air it down to ~20 psi though that was after the test fit at full pressure.

I also have a 285/70 Duratrac in the traditional spare location with no issues. And yes I have KDSS

I have a 285 with KDSS. The first time I wasn't careful and it wanted to bind up but I just slowed down a bit and held the tire centered while I raised it and it fits fine.

While I run 285/70 17's (and they do fit w/ KDSS as a spare) I elected to go with a 255/80 17 for the spare. It has essentially the same diameter as the 285 but it's thinner therefore keeping it from hanging down/out as far as the wider 285.

This is very inspiring. I did a test fit with a 17x9 wheel with KO2 285 and it didn't fit w/ KDSS, so I'll blame that on the aftermarket wheel. I'm going to drop by my local tire shop and try it again with the stock spare wheel.

An aluminum wheel isn't going to save weight BTW. I'm pretty confident the OEM aluminum wheels are heavier than the steel spare.

i'm running BFG KO2's on a stock trail wheel 285/70/17 in the stock spare tire location with KDSS with no issues, it is a snug fit but works just fine. Have been like that since ~1K miles (now at 23K)

Anyone want to add their experience with a later model year, KDSS-equipped, 4Runner and the 285 spare? I see a 2016 as the newest model year in the above responses.
The shop guys told me (so questionable right away) that the more recent 4Runners w/KDSS had changes that prevent the 285 from fitting. I'm going to be doing this in the next week or two, so would like to have my expectation set!
FWIW, a 285 Duratrac fit in the spare location of my 2012 Trail w/KDSS, so I'm hopeful.

2019 4runner. 285 Falken M/Ts (Slightly bigger than most 285s) fit no issues. No need to air it down (I run 35psi).
