I eventually want to put 285s on TRD PRO wheels but I strictly do not want to touch body mounts (cutting/pushing fender liners, pushing mudguards is OK).

It's not really the wheel well that changes from inboard to outboard.
Think of it this way. The pivot point of steering is fixed for the wheel. When you widen the wheel or push it further away from the pivot point and turn it, it has a wider arc. Short vs. long arm. It pushes the outer edge corner of the tire further outboard, but when turned that translates into more forward/aft displacement.
