I think for the majority of truck owners, lowering it makes more sense than lifting it as it at least increases accessibility and mpg.

I play around in a sport where people spend an outrageous amount of money on a gun, magazines, and gear (seriously, like $5-10K custom built pistols, another $1K in tuned magazines, $500+ on mag pouches, belt, & holster, then another $150 on the "must have" trail running shoes)...only to get beat by people running off the shelf pistols/gear and cheap tennis shoes. Like with some people's choices in mods to vehicles...we tend to laugh, poke fun (sometimes in good humor, other times not so much...depends on the "victim's" attitude), then move on.
Most of the time I just shake my head and keep on doing my thing...because I know I'm getting old (nearly 50) and not as fast as I used to be. I've learned that my opinion on them is worth about as much as their opinion is to me...neither one of us will change the other's mind.

I'm starting to think that you're really are the bully here, and you really just want to start sh*t with people that don't agree with your logic. You started this thread by complaining about how stupid-looking this dude's truck is, and now you're talking about the potential death of people due to wide mud tires?
I would feel this guy has the right to do what he chooses no matter what. You know why...that's his right and not mine to take.

I'm upset that someone is upset about someone else being upset over somebody's truck.
Who's next in line?

I've been called worse things by better men.
He absolutely does have the right to spend his money however he wants, just as I do to judge him for ruining an otherwise rad truck that would have been put to better use in someone else's hands. You also have the right to disagree with my opinion.
There are plenty of logical reasons to dislike that thing. If you want to give him a pass, that's cool too, I just hope you don't end up behind him on the highway eating rocks because of his poor life choices

I never said the build doesn't bug me, it does clearly, but the fact that he has more insta followers than I do doesn't concern me in the least.
I'm always going to call out stupidity (I'm in quality control, so calling shit out is literally part of my job), and frankly I thoroughly enjoy talking trucks with anyone. This thread was about gauging the cool/uncool factor of what this guy did before it got sidetracked.
The first time I ever saw this guy's truck, it was basically the same situation - a repost from one of the big toyota groups on IG, and I basically said the same thing - love a taco, hate the stretched tire thing, and there was a big back and forth. Now 5 months later, another taco with stretched tires reposted by Spyder Auto. I didn't even realize it was the same truck/owner. I didn't seek out his personal page to call him out.
So whatever. I maintain its a public forum, and I can like or dislike whatever I want. He made the decision to engage with me after I replied to a photo posted by a business. I may have ripped on what he did to his truck, but he attacked me personally, and I'm never going to back down from that.

Stretched tire look

You are correct that a lot of things we do to our trucks require some form of compromise - lift and tires reduce fuel economy, drawers and fridges reduce storage space. Those things are done to improve performance or usability in a given circumstance at least. If, for example, someone used their 4r as a daily driver and kid hauler, I struggle to understand what appeal that individual would see in a 4x4 enthusiasts website.
At the end of the day, this is website is frequented by those who enjoy offroad persuits, and the majority of the topics are geared towards that end. This isn't 4runnersforsoccermoms.com after all.
I struggle to see what gains in function or performance 18x12" wheels and stretched tires provide, and that was the basis that informed my arguments.
At the end of the day, this is all about entertainment. If you want to suggest that this taco owner's entertainment comes from doing that to his truck, then you must equally accept that my entertainment comes from calling out how ridiculous his truck is.

Oh I’m sorry, I didn’t realize this was 4runnersSRSOFFROADERSONLY.com
Actually, this is a site about 4runners for people who enjoy 4runners. For whatever reason.
It’s cool if you love to off road your rig. I actually also agree that his mods are stupid, to me, but I just move on to the next.
But it it doesn’t matter.
It’s unfortunate that shitting on other peoples rigs is your idea of entertainment.

That's your opinion, and I'll fight for your right to have that opinion.
Stretched tires, in my opinion, are a stupid enough idea that they are worthy of public ridicule for all of the reasons I've already mentioned. I'm certainly not prejudice to that point against everything that doesn't conform to what I believe is a good idea.
......and I'm not always so negative - you'll recall I said I liked the headlights after all

And there’s that too, tone just doesn’t come off well on the interwebs, so it’s easy for people to just assume you’re an ******* lol
Cheers!

I am an *******, I'm ok with it. If I don't like you or something you do, you'll definitely hear about it, but generally people need to earn my scorn. I also like to argue from pretty obscure philosophical positions just for the sake of the argument, so the scorn may not actually be heartfelt, or serious. And that absolutely does not translate online. Whatever happens after that is up to the other guy.

But according to this site some vehicle mods require a Reconstructed Vehicle Permit. It seems this guy’s tire setup is not legal.
FAQs - Reconstructed Vehicle Inspection - current
Snip:
“ What types of modifications require a Reconstructed Vehicle Permit?
The most common modifications that require a Reconstructed Vehicle Permit are:
Lowered vehicles:
Headlight height cannot be lower than 22 inches when measured from the ground to the center of the headlight.
Unrestricted suspension travel of at least 2 inches (front and rear).
There must be ample clearance (full turn to full turn) between the tires and the vehicle's frame, suspension and body.
Tires must meet or exceed manufacturers' GVWR load ratings.
Frame modifications will require pre-approval from DOT (C-Notch)
Lifted vehicles:
Tire treads protruding outside of vehicle body requires fender flares securely mounted.
Rear mud guards must cover width of tire treads, hang down to middle of rims or lower.”
|
You have to look at vehicle weight versus bumper height.
Vehicles 4500lbs and below can only have a max height of 29"
Vehicles 4501 to 7500 can only have a max height of 33"
But there's people not following the rule... same as people state side rocking beadlocks on the interstate
