Garage Clearances

How do you all manage with altering your 4runners (lifts, heightened racks, even cargo on the rack, etc.) and dealing with garages? Do you stick to outdoor parking and just forget about garages? I have a stock 2020 TRD Pro and I swear that big dumb basket on top barely cleared a 7’9” clearance.

Seems like parking garages would be the death of a successful trip somewhere unless you plan to search and search for outdoor parking. But if it’s your main vehicle I don’t see how you live comfortably.

It’s all the motivation I needed to get rid of the stock rack. So it will be in the 4sale page soon.

You've ran into a problem many Pro owners have - that damn useless roof rack hah.

It's probably worth the effort to remove the Pro rack and sell it (most still go for $500 or more) and put that towards an actual functional rack that is more low profile.

Considering the price and longevity of these vehicles, I don't think I could ever justify leaving it outside year round due to the roof rack - I'd just delete the roof rack.

7'9" is way more clearance than needed. In our old house I had a 7' garage door and zero problems getting my Pro in and out. For reference, the Pro measures 78" to the top of the rack, so unless the garage was actually 6'9" you need to recalibrate your height perception.

If you decide to remove your roof rack, be sure to use one of these:

I have a trail with a 3 inch lift and the slightly taller trail roof rack... depending on what kind of mood the truck is in, it’s about 6 foot 7 1/2, I have measured this.

Do not rely on the dealer, the website, or anything else. Use a string and tape measure or just a tape measure if you are tall or have somebody helping you out.

Measure several times.

I had an oh shit moment when I barely fit into the SFO parking garage.

The good news is if you barely make contact with one of those clearance sign things hanging from the parking garage, you will probably fit… Just make sure you go very slowly because if you hit a bump you will bounce off the ceiling.

Most residential car garages will fit vehicles up to 6 foot 10 if not 7 feet, also be careful with that though.

Your truck is not 7 feet 9 inches tall. Put down the bong. If the first number reads seven, you have nothing to worry about.

No way. Top of the Pro rack on a stock vehicle is 78 inches from ground — I measured mine last week. That’s 6’6”. You should have over a foot of clearance easy.

Not that there aren’t other reasons to replace the Pro rack, but your clearance isn’t one of them.

I think I wrote the wrong number. It was 6’9” not 7’9”. That sounds more right because I literally had to stick my head out the window and creep forward.

since adding the icon 2" rear springs (i have useless trd pro rack), i can no longer park in the garage backwards. the rack hits the garage door. but if i go in nose first, i clear it no problem.

Watch your head doing this--if it is that low it is probably narrow too.

All jokes at the OP’s expense aside, this is an important lesson that these days trucks are getting taller and it’s important to know exactly how tall your vehicle is, even if you’re just an average dude buying a stock vehicle from the dealership…

Even more so if it has a ridiculously tall roof rack.

And depending where you live, especially here in California, it is quite possible to purchase a factory vehicle that will not fit everywhere you go.

One of my friends recently bought a brand new Ram 1500 Warlock (poor guy lol), and did not measure before trying to park in his garage with an arch opening. He tried to go through a lower portion of the arch and ended up staring at the shark fin antennae on his windshield. Scratched his roof pretty good too. Was not even a day old lmfao.

I have an ORP with 2.5” of lift and the gobi roof rack. It’s never had an issue in my garage or any parking garage, but luckily I don’t live in the terribleness that is Southern California so we have plenty of parking lots.

I’d remove that ridiculous, ugly pro rack.

Garage floor lip. Rear tire hits it first backing in but the rack clears before the tire contacts the lip going straight?
