You're being pedantic. And you're missing the point.

The point was whether collapsed hydraulic followers could be the source of a start-up clank. Whether the followers are technically "lifters" is irrelevant. Your post implied that the engine has no hydraulic followers of any sort.

And of course all this is irrelevant since the noise has been identified as something else.

As I said before, a rose by any other name-----. See my earlier post. It is still a hydraulic device, but the Toyota engineers put it on the other side of a rocker arm (see the picture in the factory repair manual), just not directly inline with the valve/valve stem. Same function, same purpose, different location.

I started a separate thread specific for starter grind, but someone on there mentioned it's probably the valve noise. Now I don't know what to think.
