After 7 months, I got my Gobi Rack. The offset works well with the ladder.

I was thinking about making FIVE more of these total. One is already spoken for. If you'd be interested, shoot me a DM.

In addition to my original design with the tight fitting installation, they would have a few new features like:
1) camera mount in the center of the wheel
2) higher mounted license plate
3) wiring tie tabs
4) secondary latch system which holds gate in "open" position
5) 2 stage wrinkle black powdercoating
6) stainless steel contact areas in places where the powdercoat could get damaged.

It could be available either centered or offset. I'd be interested to hear if the general desire would be for centered or offset design.

Here are some pictures of my rig with the carrier and the new rack. (I need to get some real sliders)

Always amazes me the creativity and ingenuity of DIYers. Oftentimes it is better than store bought. In your case, much better than store bought.

@ctnewman ,

Thanks for deciding to make a small run of these.
This one appeals to me more than any others I have seen on the market by the usual names out there.
I like the enhanced features that are not incorporated on other carries.
Attachment to the pintle hitch is more secure than a “wedge” and cross bolt.
The entire carrier & wheel is located closer instead of located away from vehicle and hatch.

Glad to be on the list!

Pivot has bronze bushing(s) & grease zirc.
The latching hardware and spring plunger are stainless steel.
The spring plunger acts as a second locking device while the carrier is in the closed position and locks open to prevent accidental closing while open.
There is also a hard stop to prevent any issues with opening too far and damaging the vehicle.

Where in NY are you. One of the bike pick looks like the old Grumman test facility.

I really can't believe that more people haven't jumped on this. A custom built carrier that's not much more than the mass produced ones, with your choice of offset. I honestly figured the list would be full by now.

I totally agree!
The appearance, quality of construction and features compared to the mass produced ones makes this one an easy choice.
When @ctnewman informed me he would consider making a small run, I figured he would have to consider having to make more than he envisioned.

I know a couple more people that contacted me via PM, that were interested.
I’m waiting to see there names pop in here.

Hi everyone,

I have almost all parts in stock. I am waiting on material for the female portion of the hinge, but am going to start welding the lower portions in the mean time this week. My estimated completion time is 4-6 weeks. I am hoping to finish them sooner, though.

A lot of people are asking when the carriers will be done. I originally didn't want to even bring up that I was building them before they were complete and ready to ship, but the fact that I need to determine if I should make offset or centered needs to be hashed out right now.

Anyhow, all the tubes are cut and beveled for welding (a lot of companies do not pre-bevel their tubing and it results in a lower strength product). Right now I cut enough pieces to do either 2 centered, 3 offset OR 3 centered, 2 offset. I'm still not certain which route I should take.
@Saker wants a centered one @CajunMikeR want's an offset one

Here's a pic of the tubes:

Here are a picture of the pivot pins. Beefy, machined from solid 2" round:

Lastly, here are all the laser cut and cnc formed sheet metal pieces. The brightly colored pieces are 1/4" 304 stainless steel and will be used for places likely to have coating wear (bolting plates, tire mount surfaces, hinge strike plates, etc)

I estimate completion time to be 4-6 weeks, but it could go quicker than that. All purchased parts (hinge bushings, claps, lock pins, etc) are in my hands already.

@ctnewman ,
Thank you for posting the photos of the parts!
Thanks for pointing out the beveled tube ends.

All interested and possibly on the fence,
It’s obvious to me the quality of materials that are being used in these carriers. (This isn’t a shoddy list of items being used in construction)
I have been in a line of work for many years, where I know first hand the difference between butt welds and pipes or tubes that were beveled. (This allows to make a root pass and multiple passes joining the material, leaving the joint stronger than the original material.)
He also has bronze bushings, (not shown) that will be used @ the pivot point.

I concur. Just looking at the materials, the prep work, and the attention to detail, not to mention the techniques used for final assembly...I expect these to be much higher quality than anything mass produced. Honestly, it wouldn't surprise me if you could use the lower arm as a lifting point (not that I'd recommend, nor would I be testing out, that theory).

The use of stainless for contact/wear points is a nice touch that will work well and be long lasting in coastal climates (like South Louisiana, where everything rusts in short order). This is definitely going to be a high quality custom piece that will garner a lot of questions at get togethers or on the trail.
