I saw an update on the carrier, but I’m not going to get ahead of @ctnewman and give it away....

You are going to have to wait for any photos!!!!!

(I like what I am seeing. This is a hard working man, just to let all of the people know that think it may be overpriced compared to the mass production usual suspects)

Hi everyone,
Things are still going smoothly on my end. I have welded all the latch plates onto the upper arms. Tonight I am going to weld the wheel mounts on. Some things to note:

A) original design for these 5 units was a single "open" position at 120 degrees swung open. I've decided to add a second, even further" open position. The positions are held by a spring loaded plunger, operation will be as follows.

1) release center clamp holding hitch closed
2) briefly lift the secondary lock pin at the hinge and swing open the tire
3) at 120 degrees the latch pin will drop into a slot and the tire wont flop around
4a) to close, lift the pin and swing the tire closed, when the arm is fully closed the safety latch will drop into place and you can close the primary latch.
4b) if you want to open it further, lift the safety latch again and swing the tire almost 180 degrees out of the way. You wouldn't do this all the time, but for special cases it might be useful. There is also a hard stop right after the "extra wide open" position that cannot be passed so the carrier cannot hit your vehicle.

There are no loose pins to try to get into holes that aren't lined up. If you decide you don't want to have the secondary latch system at all? Well you can just unbolt it and will still have the hard stop!

B) Some notes about the primary latch.

1) all stainless construction
2) true one handed operation. There is no need to line up a hook with a reciever or anything like that, think of it as more like closing a house door and turning a deadbolt.
3) the primary latch has a locking handle itself. The handle must be squeezed (albeit lightly) to be operated. This ensures you don't accidentally bump it open with your leg.

C) some other construction notes:

1) All seams are fully welded. This is less to do with strength and more to do with corrosion resistance. Ever see stitch welds leaking rust? That's because the powdercoat can't get into those small cracks.
2) Wrinkle black powdercoat is applied over a baked on zinc primer to add rust resistance
3) Several wire management tabs will be welded onto the back of upper and lower arms. This allows you to manage your wiring for your license plate lights and your back up camera cables.
4) The camera mount is designed to use your stock camera. I would recommend just getting a used camera off ebay, but you can absolutely remove your stock camera. There is a lot of information out there about how to relocate the camera.
5) wheel mounts are pressed in OEM wheel studs. No fumbling with loose hardware. All six studs will be available, (i think having all the lug nuts on looks best) but you could get away with running only 3 for faster tire changes.

I'm excited to show you guys my "anti-rattle system but I'm going to wait until I get them built to show you how it works. In my opinion it's one of the better designs on the market.

I'll have more information and hopefully some pictures this weekend!

I Agree, been looking for a local shop to build something like this for me ever since I first saw this design.

As promised yesterday, I got the wheel holders all welded up.

Flux core is very satisfying to weld with. I reverse crowned the stainless wheel plates before welding on them to combat distortion. When cooled the plates were perfectly flat. You will notice I didn't wrap the weld around the gusset. What isn't shown here is that I actually TIG welded the end of the welds in those areas to ensure clearance for the stud head.

Here are all the arms done. Still need the secondary latch added (one is tacked on here) and the license plate bungs on the centered arms.

I had to order the new secondary latch lock plates from the laser shop, so it will be a few days before I weld those on to the lower arms. I think my next move will be to get the receivers welded on. I'll probably use my own truck for mockup/fitup purposes.

@ctnewman

It is satisfying to see raw metal being worked to create a quality product. To see the welds and understand the process as well. Most times (unless you order bare) products are powder coated and you never see this stage.

Thanks again, they look good and are coming along fine !

Hi guys. Been a minute. Here are some updates:

Got the camera mounts welded up with a camera test fit in there. These mount in the center of the spare tire, so on the offset version your camera will be 7 or so inches off center, but it shouldn't be a problem.

All the receivers are drilled for the new 3 plane locking system, and some of the locking components are welded up as well. These parts are fully tig welded.

Next I got all of the lower arms welded to the receivers. I did the mockup on my own vehicle to ensure everything fits well. Also in the pictures you will note that the female part of the receiver protrudes a lot less than it does on my early prototype. Much better looking. The second picture is the unit for @Saker .

Lastly, I was able to do a test of the new secondary latch system I mentioned earlier. It works great and performs exactly as expected.

Things left to do:

1) weld on secondary latch plates and spring plungers
2) fully weld striker tabs on lower arms
3) weld on license plate brackets and bungs
4) weld on zip tie tabs for camera/license plate light wiring
5) powdercoat, press in wheel studs and ship!

I am hoping to get at least the first 3 items done this week.

@ctnewman ,

Thanks for the progress report.
As usual, your engineering skill are are showing themselves without even trying!

Everyone should see in these photos how well built and how much attention to detail has been thought out on this carrier.
I see you have been doing a lot of the tedious work in the background and now it shines on display.
I see as well the receiver protruding is less! Kudos!

Thanks for the sneak peek on the center carrier, that’s awesome.

Can’t wait to see the next round of progress photos….
You never stop working!

Same here @Ferd_4R ,
Got backing plate and lights. Has previously ordered all wire and looming needed to relocate my camera and Lic plate lights. Got waterproof connectors so I can remove the carrier at will (if needed) by disconnecting them near the receiver. That’s going to make it really easy to do.
