Moving wired CarPlay functionality to ICS dash mount

Curious if anyone has tried to do this before, or something similar.

This USB port (with the cable plugged in) seems like the only port in my '20 that supports wired CarPlay.

I love CarPlay, but I hate having my phone wired down there around the shifters & cupholders.

I'm looking at putting this ICS dash mount in if I can route the CarPlay functionality to the usb charging harness that comes with this kit (5th Gen 4Runner Dash Mount – ICS FAB).

Has anyone tried to relocate this CarPlay USB port? Would there be enough wire that I could cut this port off and splice it into the harness on the dash mount by the clock?

I solved my where does the phone go for CarPlay issues by buying a wireless CarPlay adapter that plugs in to that USB port and sits in the little cubby next to it.

Works great. Hop in, hop out, CarPlay just works without worrying about cables.

Yes it says Volvo. Yes it’s the right one for the Panasonic head unit in the truck from the factory.

Wanted to revive this topic to see if anyone has been able to find a USB port replacement for the CarPlay port in the 2020. I am so sick of the cable and am not really looking to go with the wireless one (yet). I want to stuff this dam CarPlay port with a cable plugged into it behind the dash and run a small pigtail out by my phone holder.

Another option would be to replace the lower dash unit with a < 2019 one if someone has the model number for that.

Thanks in advance

I have this device and it has worked relatively well. Every once in a while I have to unplug it. While it does solve charging the phone it does make CarPlay much better IMHO. CPLAY2air wireless adapter for factory CarPlay on CARPLAY2air.com – CPLAY2air.com

Thanks everyone. I finally caved in and ordered a wireless dongle. Went with the one 1Louder mentions.

Update on this. Problem solved, the wireless dongle is the way to go. Got it today, setup took about 30 seconds and I don't notice any degradation in sound quality from wired. Will post back if run into any issues down the road.

Thanks everyone for the information.

So - bluetooth connection wise, you are connected to the car (for phone) and to the dongle (for CarPlay).

I want to say yes but, tbh, I don't know for sure as I have not tried making a call since getting it. I will check tonight once I get home though and let you know.

Edit: Yep - that seems to be the way it works. Was able to make calls just fine with it being hooked up.
