Slight acceleration delay

2010 SR5 with 4.0

Sometimes (mostly) there is a delay (not sure delay is the best word), I give it gas and it barely wants to move and then finally goes! It seems electronic maybe. I know these things don’t have a throttle cable, so maybe it has to do with what has replaced the cable, or maybe a TPS? It does seem to happen more when I’ve been driving and stop briefly, like to check the mail.

Anyone else ever have this, resolve?

Thanks

When you want to go, there are a number of changes that take place in the engine. Probably the one that takes the most time is the valve camshaft repositioning. Also, keep in mind that the power output from the engine is torque times RPM, thus at low RPM, the power is low. When the RPM gets higher, you have more power. Thus it seems to be weak (less power) when you first start out .

Sadly, what you experience is common on modern cars due to the environmental and economy mandates from the government.

How's your transmission fluid level? When is the last time it was changed?

"Sometimes" you are in overdrive - check gear ratios and understand how transmission works. Shift from D to S and in 4s gear give some throttle. Be safe.

My 2013 has a slight dead spot in the throttle travel. The first small distance, there is no response from a stop, then it's OK. I know it's not throttle linkage slack.

I have learned to press gently but quickly at first (to get past the small dead zone), then press as needed/wanted. If I'm too quick to press, then it jerks at first. Takes a while to make that motion become automatic. It can be a real nuisance when off road on rough patches, I have to work at it.

One of the Throttle Commander type units will probably help if it's worse than mine.

I had a similar problem in my 2010 Trail. For me it was only when I was at low speeds, often when turning a corner in a residential area, I would take the corner hit the gas and it took a second for it to get going and shift gears. There was a technical service bulletin for it. They updated some software and I had the transmission fluid replaced. The issue largely went away. I've noticed it only a handful of times in the 3+ years since.
