2020 fog light cover

Retrofitting 2021 LED's and DD LED fogs into my 2020 SR5 today and discovered a plastic shroud covering the OEM passenger side fog light housing. Does anyone know what this is for and if it's necessary? I'd like to keep it off if it's not a big deal.

Since the inner fender well has an opening to facilitate intake air, the rear of the fog light is covered to help keep water from splashing into/onto it.

You may get by without the cover. No guarantees!
