AirDownGearUp SS1: Storage, Sleeper and Drawer System for 5th Gen 4Runner

Hello Everyone,

AirDownGearUp has been selling a storage, sleeper and drawer system for Landcruisers since 2017. We also have a system for the 5th Gen 4Runner as well!

As a brief overview of the SS1; it is a modular system that can be configured as a simple storage platform, storage+sleeper, or the full storage+sleeper+drawer system, with the ability to install drawers individually. The drawers are full-extension, ball-bearing, lock-in and lock-out. The drawers and sleeper can be purchased up front or added later and retrofitted. The system is comprised of CNC cut Baltic Birch, with recessed mounting hardware and fold-up wings to retain access to the side cubbies. Details can be found at airdowngearup.com

I have attached a few pictures showing a recent install of a full system. I would be happy to provide more details, let me know what you think!

Goose Gear looks awesome, but we were shocked to learn most of it is just very nicely coated plywood. They make awesome looking stuff, but it is quite expensive for plywood.

Our pricing is quite a bit better and I think our material quality is on par, maybe better. Since we don't use a coating, we have to keep the material itself looking and feeling excellent. Top shelf Baltic Birch, aluminum, stainless steel, Textured UV resistant HDPE, etc...

Please reach out if I can answer any detailed questions. We're very proud of the product we've created and excited to show it off to more folks here!

Is the sleeping platform easily removable?

Looks great but with most of these systems, my OEM Audio+ sub is in the way. I should probably ditch it to open up my options.

Yes, Sleeper panel comes out with two screws, that's it.

If you're referring to the entire system, the answer is also yes. The system is anchored with 4 turnbuckles. Install/removal is as simple as undoing those 4 turnbuckles. That's it.

If you have drawers (which are optional) you will want to empty their contents before lifting the system out, but the actual install/removal of the system itself is very quick and is one of the main product differentiators we offer.

I would love it if one of these companies ever made a drawer system about half as high as these, but also mounts via turnbuckle.

I would buy one in a heartbeat.

How high would you want the drawer or platform surface?

This isn't out of the question for us to offer. Of course, we prefer to standardize, but we've done many custom systems.

Sometimes it's as simple as chopping the legs and drawer.

Probably something flush with the bottom of the taillight.

Basically have a 65L cooler that would ride on top, but don't want to sacrifice all of my trunk space to drawers. This is my dilemma.

Ok, understood. That may be an easy adaptation. Shorter legs and chopped drawer walls should do it.

Anyone else interested in a shorter version?

I agree, I would like to have more headroom and less drawer space.

Keep in mind that the higher height is necessary to maximize the sleeping length. We could lower a non-sleeper, but lowering a sleeper would shrink your usable sleep space.

The standard SS1 matches up with the surface of the seat bottom end pretty well and allows you to get another ~6 inches of sleeping length. If we were to lower the platform, you'd lose that extra flat space.

Does the give and take of the sleeping length change your thoughts on the headroom?

FWIW, we find the headroom a minor inconvenience that's overcome by extra sleeping space and storage capacity.

I'd be in for a system that evens the transition from cargo to rear seat when the 2nd row is flat. This may be even lower profile than others have mentioned. I'm not opposed to pulling out the carpet/foam padding just like the OEM cargo tray to utilize that space.

I'd be interested in a 8" or 10" system. IMO 12" height is too high for most drawer systems. A drawer or sleep system that sits flush with the wheel well arches would be ideal.
