Hey all... before I start, I've made some kickass changes to my rig and all thanks to the advice I've gotten here... When the wife took it to get the oil changed the other day (another question y'all have answered) the guy at the oil change place said "if there's ever a zombie apocalypse, this is the vehicle you want". On to the question.

I'm taking the running boards off to put steps on (I don't want nerf bars, I want steps), but there's an issue. Most of the ones I've seen (on the internet and on the road) don't have the step where we want them. On the front set of doors the steps are always too far forward. I've gotten in and out of other guys' trucks and the step just doesn't seem useful because it's too far forward.

Am I the only one who thinks this way? If not and anyone out there agrees with me, is anyone aware of a brand of steps that sit in a more useable position, that doesn't require drilling?

Not an answer to your question, but you should consider how you get into your 4Runner. The steps are forward so you can place your left foot on the step, then swing your right foot behind, to the right to place on the floor. If the steps are more to the rear, you can't put your left foot on the step for there would not be enough room to swing your right foot in.

For tall people, like me, I can get in by first putting my right foot on the floor mat, then swing my butt onto the seat, but I realize that is not possible for shorter people.

If you have a lift, then it makes it even harder to get in "gracefully".

A lot of people complain about either running boards or steps because they get mud on their legs when they get out. But without running boards or steps, it is really hard to get in if you are short.

Evidently I need to reply to X number of threads before I can start a new one.

I am considering purchasing a 2021 4Runner. I have questions for which a lot of searching has not resulted in any answers.

All questions pertain to the SR5 with the part time 4 wheel drive option.

1. With the part time 4 wheel drive option does the SR5 still come with operational rear drive limited slip (i) when 4WD engaged?, (ii) when 4WD not engaged?

2. I see mention of an Anti-theft Security system. Does the system include an alarm in the event of window breakage, door opening etc?

3. Sliding rear cargo deck. What are dimensions of the area below the optional sliding rear cargo area?

4. With the 2nd row seats folded down what are the dimensions (not capacity) of cargo area behind front seats (length, width, height)

1. There is no locking differential, front or rear, on the SR5. However, traction control (TRAC) can act somewhat like a locking differential, in that if one tire is slipping, the brakes are applied to that wheel which sends power to the other wheel. TRAC is turned off in 4x4 low.

2. There is no window breaking detector. The vehicle will alarm if a door is opened or the hood is opened after the system has been armed (doors locked). Possible scenarios: a person left inside after the doors are locked attempts to open a door or the hood; a window or sunroof is left open, and a person reaches in and opens a door.

3. Not sure I understand your question. According to my sales brochure, a 4Runner with the rear sliding cargo tray has the interior cargo volume reduced by one cubic foot, which I don't believe. The pictures I have seen of vehicles with the sliding cargo tray, the rear floor is raised 4 to 6 inches above what the floor normally is.

4. The cargo volume behind the front seats (second row seats folded) is about 89.7 cubic feet. Toyota does not provide linear dimensions, only the volume. You can take a tape measure to your dealer and measure one of their vehicles on the show room floor.

I don't have a sliding cargo tray, but it seems to make sense. Let's say the sliding tray and hardware sits 2" above the floor. The tray would only have to be 2' x 3' to equal one cubic foot.

So maybe a little thinner than two inches and larger than 2' x 3'. 1 cu foot makes sense to me.

I hated the nfab side steps for that reason -they were way too far forward. Because they're too far forward, in snowy/wet weather, it's super easy to slip and bonk your ankles/shins. After slipping twice, that was the last straw that cause me to ditch them for tyger running boards.

I also am not a fan of the N-Fab step locations, the only option I could find for better steps was full on rock sliders

Interesting. I put the N-Fab steps on mine to appease the vertically challenged people in my life. I actually started using them too and I kinda like them.

Mine came with the Nfab nerf/steps, I liked them.
But..
I have removed them and installed rock sliders.
(I'm wanting to sell the Nfabs)
