plastic piece under engine skid
What is the point of this plastic piece on the engine skid that you have to remove every time for an oil change, does it hurt to keep it off...?

It's an air duct, it's supposed to direct air through the skid, presumably to get 0.003% better gas mileage? Reduce road noise? I dunno. I think it's more cosmetic than anything.

Appearance trim, maybe.
Function, helps direct all air thru radiator area and also helps keep mud and debris from going into that area.

My 2016 SR5 does not have that part under/on the skid--perhaps it was added on models after 2016?.
Could you show a pic of where that fits? Thanks.

That piece is supposed to be on your SR5.
It’s call a Radiator Support Air Deflector (Front, Lower)
2016 Toyota 4Runner Radiator Support Air Deflector (Front, Lower). PACKAGE, Body, BUMPER - 5210135700 - Genuine Toyota Part
It’s located between the bottom of your front fender and your OEM skid plate.
Some sort of this deflector comes on all 4Runners.
When the TRD Pros came out, the port was famous for throwing them away instead of cutting them to fit the gap.
Here is a pic on my other T4R after TRD skid plate install.

The factory instructions for installing the TRD skid plate says to discard that panel: https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon....17mB4nXCGL.pdf

I took a few minutes and cut mine on both of my T4R's and put them back on. When I remove my TRD skid, trim stays in place. It doesn't get in the way

It does a good job keeping winter salt off the chassis.

This is a mystery cover. Not on my 18 ORP. What model year/trim do you have?
Show a photo of where it is installed.

Oh wait.... maybe I was the one shy of not having my 5th cup of Espresso!!!!
I was wrong!
That piece shown is NOT the part I described.
I do not know what the OP shield has either, after looking again!

It looks like front intake duct part #5281235010 but not sure why OP had to remove for oil change.

Limited trim 2020
It has 4 clips that go into the engine skid. and I remove it so the other plastic part that it covers in front can be removed so I can remove the engine metal skid hooks .
