The Jeep is kind of a one-trick-pony. It is a very good trick, but if that trick is not all you need or desire...

The 4Runner is more versatile. It does most of what many folks will ever want or need on the trail. It is FAR better on the road and much more reliable.

They both lack power and some of the more modern conveniences that other vehicles have. Most of those vehicles have no trail skills, however.

If I were buying a dedicated off road toy, I'd definitely consider a Jeep. However, it sure as heck wouldn't be a new one as I'm not Bill Gates and can't afford a new Rubicon to turn into an actual off road beast.

For everyday and off road, I think 4Runner, especially if you're keeping it past the warranty period. YMMV.

I have both an 08 wrangler lifted on 35s, and a 2018 4runner off road premium. They serve different purposes, the jeep was my daily for years even after lifting it. You have to like it for what it is, drives like a tractor, top leaks etc. Very fun in the summer, top down doors off. The 4runner is comfortable driving year around regardless of the weather; it doesn't hurt that its awesome off road. For something you want to drive into the ground as a daily, I would go 4runner. For something as a fun second vehicle, jeep is the way to go.
