have a 17 SR5 prem blacked out with the 5100s trd pro suspension. Only 47k miles and enjoy the 4runner. Debating if we should trade in for a 21 or 22 eventually or just keep it and do this mod.

There is no performance difference and I will probably be swapping mine out later on. I went with the closed valve initially thinking the whole system would be quieter and it could be a sleeper, but that's not turning out to be the case
Cool, thanks for clarifying

I'm guessing all we have here is a slight difference in the very loose terminology for a blow off valve when it comes to car talk.

Some diverter/blow off changes can have operational benefits, but its most likely that 'upgrade' means louder or sounds cooler. Blowing off to the atmosphere is much louder than recirculating the pressure - note that after market intakes can make the recirculation louder as well.

PROCHARGER WITH TIAL BOV/ INSTALL! SOUNDS INSANE!! - YouTube

A waste gate is used to bleed of excess boost in a turbo setup, blow offs and diverters purge the pressure when the throttle body is closed which can cause problems with the turbine (you've probably heard turbo flutter before, google it)

Procharger actually has some definitions on their website:

ProCharger Bypass Valves | ProCharger

Wastegates can also make a noise, some external waste gates on like big single turbo GNs or Supras can be frightening.

It is to my understanding that a waste gate is not needed on a procharger as it's speed is driven by the engine speed
Thanks for pointing that out👍

Mine is paid off and I don't want another payment. If you like what you have keep it, but I have heard used vehicles are gold right now.

A new 4runner vs a 17 with the mod is two totally different animals.

Well said and technically correct, the best kind of correct

The valve I want is around $400 so I'm gonna be sitting on this closed valve for awhile I think, but maybe for christmas.

If the only thing you are looking for is more oomph, I would play with performance upgrades for sure. You can do an awful lot of go fast goodies for the price of a year's worth of car payments.

Just the bullet open (Procharger Bullet Bypass Anti-Surge Valve Open - Beefcake Racing) but I'll need to swap out my top tube for one that doesn't have the bypass inlet on it or plug it hence the extra $50

Actually it looks like I won't be swapping it out. Procharger is saying that with the kit they provide, the tune requires the recirc bypass valve.

Fuel Economy

OK. I'm not entirely sure if this is real or not. I've gone through 2 tanks now and they are both saying I'm getting 21+ MPG, up from 17.5, after the SC. My next tank up I'll do the math manually and see if the trip computer has just lost its mind.
Part of that I can attribute to I actually drive easier on the truck because I can hear every little thing the engine is doing now, but not THAT easier.

better mileage with a poweradder mod..that's kind of counterintuitive..however, if that is the case, then the mod could actually pay for itself over the years in gas savings..yes, that's the line I'm going to use to convince my wife...

Yeah you can't dump out metered air. It would have gotten annoying anyway and you would hear the air being dumped out at part throttle.

I mean, if that ends up being the case I think I just justified a WHOLE bunch of credit card purchases for our fellow t4r members.
