lifting 2021 venture with kdss question
a shop is telling me i can only lif it 2.5 front and 1'' rear for the kdss to still work
is this accurate and they recommended that i get Bilstein 5100
i originally wanted icons but it said all icons do a 2'' lift at the rear which wont be ideal with kdss so is this the best option to go or any other ways i do do this.. i just want kdss to still work while getting as high as i can
FJ4RBILK10 Bilstein Height adjustable front and matching 5100 Rear shocks (10+ 4Runner & FJ Cruiser)
and these springs for the back as well as a kdss spacer

itll be better overall, theyre not wrong. you can do ICON front set to 2-2.5" and then do the rear bilstein springs with icon shocks.
you only have 8-9" of travel available, if you lift it 3", youre taking that much travel away from "droop". which can make for a jarring ride when the tire runs out of droop travel; and the entire vehicle falls into the pothole.

@ Gouranga
if theyre going to use your existing tophat or if you get an aftermarket one to assemble the front, you can get extended studs and possibly but in a shim/spacer for an additional .25 or .5 lift. not sure if you want to go past that.
I know its been done with kdss and non-kdss but as for the quality of the ride I cant remember. There are some older threads that discuss. I know I've seen discussions about it around the bilstein 6112 as I was planning on doing it when I had bilsteins but i'm on kings now so thats in the past.
^^^ someone correct me on this.
i dont think you can put in a spacer on top of a Icon coilover. for sure you cant with Kings. i mean you can but not sure if its safe.
good luck

If memory serves, this started with accutune. They make really good stuff, but when i discussed this with them, they stated they will not use kdss spacers or calibrate the system and dont recommend doing so.
For lower budget lifts and people not wanting to touch kdss, its a good rule of thumb. That said, you can dismiss that advice entirely if you set it up correctly. Use kdss spacers, rebalance the kdss system, pick extended travel coilovers, and lift it. Do that, and the truck will ride, drive, and articulate great.
Im running 3” up front and 2” in the rear on mine.

Bottom line- just dismiss that advice entirely. Use spacers, rebalance the system, extended travel coilovers, and lift it. Do that, and the truck will ride, drive, and articulate great.

Please elaborate on recalibrating or rebalancing KDSS. Unless I'm reading that wrong...

open the kdss valves 2-2.5 turns, install the spacers, rock the truck back and forth, close the valves.

i have a high budget so what you recommend me then i just want best ride quality because id be mostly driving on highway doing a cross country run this summer then the beaten paths when i get to parks and stuff so i dont need a kit thats amazin off road im more into the fact a 4runner just looks so much better lifted so basically im doing it for looks but i also want to maintain ride quality during normal roads..
but since kdss cucks me my options are limited
so is just doing the first option is enough and going more expensive makes no sense or is there another better option with money no issue in mind ?

KDSS doesnt cuck you. We keep up with stock gen 2 raptors in our toyota with kings/king bumps.... at half the cost of a raptor, i'd say raptors are cucks.
For what youre looking to do 5100's, fox 2.0's, or step up to 6112's would be perfect. rear you can find 1.5" lift springs from wheelers or bilstein. whatever rear shock stickers you like the most. pair with wheel spacers or -12 offset wheels and itll sit nicely.
theres an older bilstein thread with some sweet setups that really are great for the money.
you dont need to open the kdss system or mess with it if you do 2-2.5" front and 1.5" rear springs.

You arent “cucked” by KDSS. Far from it. Cucking is a choice, but thats probably another topic….
Just do it right with extended travel shocks and coil overs and you’ll be fine. Im 3” up front and 2” up rear. My side to side is only off by 1/16” rear and about 3/8” up front, with no shim packers or preload variations or whatever other nonsense, and it drives and rides great on toad and off.
