Head Unit and Speakers Upgrade (Android)

My wife has been using our 4R (Limited) for the past five years because we had a kiddo five years ago, and the 4R was the safest vehicle we had. Money was tight, so we weren't able to upgrade our other vehicle until now. We're getting a newer truck that will become her truck, so I'm getting my 4R back. Can't wait!

I'm looking to upgrade the head unit and speakers, but I don't want to deal with running amps and such. What can y'all recommend in terms of head units that work well with Android? It's been a while since I looked, and Crutchfield has a TON of options, but I wanted to check with folks that would have real world experience with what's out there. I'd like to retain most (if not all) of the steering wheel controls, if possible.

As for speakers, I'm not an audiophile, but I like a good sound. What would y'all recommend? Also, is it worth installing sound dampening in the doors?

Thanks.

I'm on my third head unit. Tried the Dasaita and it just had too many issues, returned after about 5 days. Put in a Halo9, way too many shortcomings for over $1k. Have the Kenwood Excelon 10.1 now and I love it. iDatalink Maestro keeps your steering wheel controls. The Kenwood is pretty large and does block some vision of your climate controls, and blocks half of the middle vents. But, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto plus a lot more.

I also had the install shop put in Kenwood Excelon speakers with dampening mats. The sound is incredible. As someone who drives a lot, and loves music... money well spent. The non-premium stock audio package is straight trash.

Kenwood and Pioneer make solid head units.
I prefer the Kenwood Excelon line of them.
If your looking for easy interface with an android phone lol for ones with android auto either wired or wireless.

For speakers if not running a separate amp but only off the head unit look for speakers with a high sensitivity rating.
They will play louder and better with lower power.

Hertz, Focal, Morel and infinity make a bunch of options that work very well, if your looking for a little more low end to round out the sound but not take up a bunch of space look at self powered hideaway subs.
They fit well under the front seats and help alot round out the sound and stay out of sight.

For speakers, go with the OEM Audio Plus. (4runner - OEM Audio Plus) They are plug and play easy install and work great.

OEM Audio Plus also sells amps and subs for use with the stock head unit.

I did sound dampening at the same time when I replaced all the speakers to Focal 690 and 650. I really like how it turned out. Head unit is stock.
No more hollow sound when closing doors, bass is much tighter with no sub, and sound is clear.
If you add an amp then you'll be golden.

Since joining the 5th Gen with a 2019 TRD PRO last week, I've gone on a tear trying to catch up on any updates to Entune/JBL Premium Soundsystems specifically for adding Android Auto. Put a Sony AX7000 in my 2008 last year, and it's been a game changer. Having Android auto and Carplay just changes the drive.

On that front, for 5th Gen found TrailGridPro's youtube and their website with a simple kit change. I haven't personally used the below kit, but having the Sony XAV-AX7000 in the 4th gen, I can tell you that the headunit is amazing compared to the Entune setup. One huge benefit is the Sony has a built in amp puts out 100W x 4, more juice for whatever aftermarket speakers you put in(I used Kickers in the 4th gen). They also have kits for the AX5000, but that only has 55W x 4, so less boom but great functionality. Crutchfield doesn't have the sony as an option which i thought was odd, but these guys have a whole setup that seemed easier than what i did in the 4th Gen from crutchfield's field guide.

Worth looking at, and if we don't get the android auto option, i'm ripping entune out and slapping in the 7000 or whatever model is out there then. Feel free to ask any questions about the headunit. Good luck Sony XAV-AX7000 Plug & Play Bundle | '10 - '19 4Runner | Trail Grid Pro

Do you have a pic of the Kenwood installed? I'm looking into Android Auto units and was curious to see the fitment.

I'm going with a Kenwood 276bt-it has the most available features to use with the maestro rr2 .

The stock headunit has too much lower frequency unavailable for my sound preference.

I'll be tackling this in the next 2 weeks

CTH T10

Join the "CTH 4Runner Android Head Unit Owners" facebook page. I was on the fence until I did this and realized that the support community for these units far exceeds anything else available.

Its an android tablet basically with an amp. It's not as intuitive as an off the shelf name brand unit but the capabilities of the unit are only limited to what the internet has to offer.

I wanted something simple but a large oem looking screen with android as well as wireless CarPlay. I also have a limited w/JBL. I choose the Cth T9. it’s an amazing HU with tons of possibilities.

You have a link to this headunit? I want to upgrade the radio in our '17 to something with Android Auto.

Trying to figure out which unit to purchase as well. It’s a tossup between the dasaita or the joying unit.

Installed my T10 last week. I love it so far. I bought it to have a better Bluetooth & Android Auto option, so I doubt I'll use it for all the other options. Looks OEM, easy installed. The facebook group has a really good support system on it. They're pricey...around $580 or so, but as much as I drive, I wanted an updated headunit.

Head Unit and Speakers Upgrade (Android)

I see that the units are available to purchase from Car Trim Home but it doesn’t allow you to select a Dash Bezel color.

I see that more than a few were delivered with the wrong color Bezel and I’m trying to rectify that.

What front camera did you guys purchase to work with this HU ?
