Can we replace the trim around the stock headunit on 2020s+?

I'm interested in installing something like the Expedition Essentials powered accessory mount that drills into the trim surrounding the radio and mounts where the clock is. I don't really like drilling into things that can't be replaced, however, in case I want to remove it at some point.

So, I'm wondering if that trim can be replaced or not. I mean the section inside the rather crude orange line. If I can replace it in the future, I'm not worried about drilling all sorts of holes in the one I have now.

What accessories? If just a cell phone or tablet, get a ProClip which does not require drilling.

Honestly, I was going to use it to mount a MXT400 radio on top and maybe a cell phone holder. The iPad is getting mounted with a Ram mount on the floor.

The radio is my main problem at the moment. Trying to decide where to mount that where I can still see the frequency, etc. easily is vexing.

That's more or less what I want to install, but I'm curious if the trim is replaceable since you have to drill it.

Almost everything on a Toyota vehicle is "replaceable". You would need to find the part number. Two ways to find part numbers:

One, go to the official Toyota parts web site: Toyota Parts and Accessories - Official Online Store

Two, visit your local dealership's parts department.

Once you have the part number, you can find used parts on Ebay or your local pick-and-pull lot.

So I did look around that parts website, but all I can find is the complete headunit for over $4k. That's what I'm worried about. I'm worried that it's all one piece and can't be replaced.

I wonder if anyone has taken one of these out of the dash yet to see if it's all one piece or if that piece of trim can be separated.

It would be crazy to think that it couldn't be readily replaced, given how easily trim scratches, but maybe Toyota is like that.

That's a great question. I installed my mount without thinking about it though. For as cheap as these type of mounts are I'm just going to leave it mounted when I sell it or trade it in down the road.

Someone else can worry about the holes down the road. Drill away good sir. Hell I drilled a 1" hole in the top of mine and installed a rubber grommet for the wiring running to it. Everything is hidden if you leave it installed.

Correct. You can only buy the entire unit. I went through this about a year ago when I replaced the entire audio system in my '20. I needed another set of vent thumbwheel covers and found out everything in that bezel, radio and all, is all one part number.

I remember a place selling just the trim as an "upgrade" for non TRD models. I'll have a look.

Edit: Nevermind, it's just a stick on cover.

That’s a major bummer, and seems incredibly stupid. I mean, if some moron somehow scratches the hell out of the trim, they have to replace the whole headunit in the name of cosmetics? Madness.

It’s weird, because it looks like the knobs are replaceable. Ugh.

I have to figure out another solution for the radio, I suppose. With the console safe in place, that really limits my options there as well.

So I’ve been considering that, but I have this thing about modifying vehicles permanently. Like if I decide I don’t like the brakcet, for instance. Or if I find the setup rattles, or that the orientation isn’t ideal. I like to be able to return it to stock.

I really hesitate to drill stuff I can’t replace. It’s not the money involved, really.

The knobs just pull off. There are a number of after market suppliers of knobs, including AJT Design: Products | ajt-design

You could buy a used radio (2015 - 2018 Toyota 4RUNNER GPS Navigation Touchscreen Radio CD 86100-35360 OEM | eBay) which would be much less $$ than a new unit. Still pricey.

Hey, if this is a piece that is compatible with the 2020+, please link it. I've been looking for one. All I see are 2019 and earlier stick on covers.
