Now I feel slightly better about way overpaying for my 2014 a few years ago...

Granted, it only had 40k miles on it, but $28k was still probably not the smartest decision. Makes me wonder how much I could get out of it today.

Just ran my TRD ORP through Carvana. They offered me about 4k more than I paid for it.

However, new inventory is pretty sparse at all the Toyota dealers near me. So I could sell mine, but then I'd have a tough time replacing it.

I traded my 2016 ORP towards a 2021 Pro ... The dealer has it listed at 35k with 50,000 miles. I paid 40 for it.

Exactly the reason that my recently-purchased '21 was the first new car I've bought in 25 years. The 4runner is one of those vehicles for which it's difficult to justify buying a 3 year old used model coming off lease (like I usually do for our primary vehicles). It's worked out pretty well for our Hondas, but after seeing the asking prices for used vs. new 4Runners, there was no choice to be made. The several thousand dollars off new just isn't worth the loss of the warranty, the years, the miles, and not knowing how the other owner treated the car.

I would never buy a 1-3 year old 4Runner over a new one. (Or Tacoma) I just sold my 2011 SR5 for 21K. I really want a truly new 4Runner (Basically no difference between 2021 and my 2011) Of course, I may die of old age before I see that..

I usually buy used cars to let someone else take the depreciation hit. With the 4Runner, it didn’t work out. Dealer wouldn’t budge on a CPO 2019 TRD ORP for $39K, ended up buying a 2021 from a different dealer in January. I guess used prices went up even more since that time.

That's insane.
Extremely high demand and low inventory due to the pandemic reducing production big time.

Yep nothing new, the used market is nuts in Canada. Dealers are buying used 4runners and shipping to the US, making a killing with the exchange rate. Its so bad buying used makes no sense how close the new ones are priced. A 2 year old 4runner is roughly 2 to 3k cdn less than a new one . Don't even get started on the tacoma value, anyone who bought one 5 years ago would be losing less that 5k

What would a 2014 SR5 4WD with 251K trouble free miles fetch? No accidents. Body and interior in very good condition. California car with no rust.

With Toyota announcing the 6th gen coming out for 2023 when I go for my trd offroad premiums this coming February I'm kind of dreading what I'm going to have to pay but I want the 4.0 5 speed.
I had it in my 2010 tacoma and loved it and I want my heated leather seats and moonroof back!

And massive inflation starting to kick in due to irresponsible deficit spending.

Inflation is a major concern, could make car prices (and all prices for that matter) skyrocket.

I can see our 4Runners becoming a prime target for thieves ...

Fascinating - just tested it and Carvana offered $20.5k for my '11 Trail with 89k miles. About what I paid for it a long time ago now... Tempted to roll that into a LC now that my kids are bigger, but won't.
