What to do When You Break Your CV or Tie Rod Off Road
Awesome video! But I have to laugh at how easy that tie rod end came off with just one tap of a hammer....

the outer/wheel side joint shattered and threw the balls everywhere. I was offroading in Moab and trying to get past a very difficult obstacle. I was very stuck, was giving it gentle throttle, it started to move, so I got optimistic and gave it more throttle. = broken axle.

a lot of responders apparently haven't read the OP or my follow-ups, but... I drove 45 miles of legit gnarly offroading and then 70 miles of pavement with the axle broken. The axle was still together, it just didn't have the balls in it to drive the wheel, so it just spun inside the joint. It was fine. I bought a new one from Oreillys and threw it in on the sidewalk. It has more play in it than the OEM one did, which is annoying, but it's fine. I've driven at least 2k miles on the Oreillys one with no issues.

Did you have Atrac or other systems on when the CV grenaded?

It was in 4 low. I had the rear diff lock on. I probably had A trac on because I was really stuck, but I don't remember.

Sounds good. Yeah, definitely keep extra parts on hand. Easy enough to switch it out.

FWIW - the common wisdom is that the aftermarket ones use inferior metalurgy and are more prone to breaking in the future. So if you can - I'd consider either swapping it back to an OEM one or buying an OEM as a spare so the next time you can change back to OEM. Unless you want to spend $$$ on RCI CVs. They're pretty robust, so it's unusual to see them broken.

The other spare part I'd consider having if you spend a lot of time in rocks is a rear drive shaft. It's a low point that tends to get a lot of rock time on mine. Haven't broken one yet - but it's pretty exposed. Moab trails aren't so bad. Other places with more boulder type rocks tend to be more prone to taking out a drive shaft.

If you get an RCV be careful. They may be strong enough that you move the failure point to inside the diff or ADD. I read a thread on Tacoma World where a guy blew up his ADD housing when using an RCV CV.

I stumbled across a new OEM CV shaft on Facebook marketplace for $50.
I hope I never need it.
