Mpg Mods?

With gas prices creeping up and new products out, what are some mods to improve MPG on 4runners?

This has been discussed approximately ONE MILLION times in the past. You should search before posting things like this. There are very few viable options to improve MPG in a 4Runner. The best option is to use a lighter, stiffer, lower profile tire. Next would be to decrease cross sectional profile of the vehicle to reduce drag, meaning a shorter "smoother" vehicle. In order to accomplish this you would want to remove your roof rack, install a lowering kit, narrow tires, etc. Most people aren't going to do ANY of those. The next best is to decrease overall vehicle weight however possible. Remove the rear seats, radio, AC system, empty the glove compartment...you get where I'm going with this. There are no magic MPG cures like there are in the diesel world with engine tuning, etc. I've never found an additive that improves MPG enough to even pay for itself, though engine longevity is another issue to consider.

I think these give you more power though...

I don't think there are simple cheap mods that would give you more MPG which end up saving more $ at the pump than the cost of the mod in the first place.

Possibly weight reduction like taking out seats and taking off any weight. All season tires. It's a tall box of a truck with a gas guzzler motor and tranny.

I ride my bike to work and to perform small errands.

Cost is between $150 (craigslist beater) to $600 (basic new hybrid) and effort.

I did search, briefly, just thought it would be best to just ask again. At the end of the day almost anything and everything on forums is always asked a bunch of times over and over again. People come across new things all the time so.. Why not ask once again.

On a side note, I already have those. Thanks for the recommendation and for taking your time

Other than the usual drive slower and easier on braking/acceleration.
Drive when it’s not rush hour
Avoid headwinds, rain, snow.
Move to an unpopulated high desert
Pump up your street tires
Remove excess weight and roof racks.
Avoid using A/C as much as possible.
Perform maintenance, especially air filter, MAF, Throttle Body

I do a lot of these when I can, but I’m not gonna go slower than average Hwy speeds and I’m not gonna go without A/C.
I’m also gonna use the damn truck as intended.

Don't put massive E-load tires on your mall crawler.

I converted my 4r to a hybrid. Installing the system was surprisingly simple...I opted for easy "peel and stick" conversion kit. Those bolt on ones are much too complicated.

Theres a few threads on MAF calibrators combined with intakes/exhausts that you should look into.

URD MAF Sensor Calibrator PnP, 2010+ 4Runner V6 4.0L - Underdog Racing Development

I personally got about 1 mpg back with this installed and an AFE Momentum GT intake. Was it worth the price for the mpg? Meh. Still fun and sound nice under load with no droning. Love the pedal response more than anything.

City living is pretty easy with my commute being 6-9 miles each way depending on which route I take. Ride all 4 seasons and lucky to shower at my office building. If building didn't have a shower I'd sign up for a gym close by. There's a bunch of tiny cheap gyms popping up left and right.

Biking vs. driving is maybe 10-15 minutes slower.
Biking vs. public transit is actually faster for my commute.

Really depends on your commute situation but I love it.

I put an AFE momentum intake and a Borla cat-back on mine a few months ago. Netted me a MASSIVE .2mpg gain. I did it because I wanted a bit more sound not for mileage. My V-Strom gets like 50MPG so I use that as much as possible in the summer. But I am also moving 11 minutes from where I work too.
