TRD PRO Roof Rack question

im used to the rack from my 2012 trail edition which just had 2 cross bars

so im trying to understand how to best use this trd rack

I want to cross bars as far apart as possible, however, I cant move them all the way back due to width of bars. the cross bar is too long, even when I put it to shortest dimension.

and in the front there is a little screw with rubber grommet in each bar,, not sure its purpose and it prevents me from putting the other crossbar all the way forward.

any thoughts on this?

There are several threads on this if you search. Summary.

1) People like me that tried hard to make it useful, found it wasn't going to work, and sold it and put on an aftermarket rack.
2) People that bought an aftermarket drop-in basket that one manufacturer makes.
3) Some dude cut the first rail off and made it just 1 level and a bit more useful.

But it it's stock form, it's not really good for anything.

That's not true, it's great at creating additional wind noise

Ha. Ok Thank You
Can’t imagine someone would but it and don’t want to spend more money on another expensive rack

Can those 2 front screws be removed? What’s their use?

I found no good use for mine so I took it off and feel it looks better without it and no more wind noise also

I usedthe roof rack a lot on my 2012 for paddle boards and surfboards. I’m hoping it can work no one else out there using it for this purpose?

1. You can buy additional cross bars to give added support. I bought two more from the dealer. Same part number as the roof rack with CB added to the end.

2. Some people have been able to put a bar in front of the button. I haven't tried that. The purpose of the buttons is to keep you from putting bars too far forward. If you take the button off, be sure to seal the hole so water doesn't get inside.

Ok
Your #2 response is what I was looking for
Will remove and put bar forward

Annoying the cross bars don’t extend enough so I can use on top rail far back

To cover the hole, try hole plugs available at hardware stores. They come as small as 1/8 inch. https://www.lowes.com/search?searchTerm=hole+plug

This is how my rack is set up. I don’t really use the lower bars for anything other than my Hi Lift at the moment. I might install some traction boards or gas tanks on the other side; not sure yet.

I’ve used my rack to haul 3/4” plywood, 4x8” MDF, 2x4’s, 2x6’s, and other random stuff. I don’t overland, so the stock rack works fine for me. The rubber feet on top prevent things like plywood from scratching the rack and keeps them from sliding.

What brackets are you using for the Hi-Lift on that Pro rack?

Yes, there are several threads with photos and write ups. I currently have a Yakima Skybox 16 on mine for my and my kids’ skis. I had to grind some plastic off the back edge of the box top to keep the rear hatch from hitting it.

If your boards fit on the crossbars of your old rack, I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t go on the Pro crossbars.
