New 4Runner TRD Off Road

Okay, just picked up my new TRD Off Road today, first impressions after a short drive are very positive.

I had never driven one before, not even for a test drive, I purchased just on the basis of reviews and information I gathered from this forum, thanks to everyone here for that.

Having never driven one I really did not know what to expect.
My daily driver for the past two years has been a GENESIS G70 sports sedan with over 370hp so I was kind of a little concerned that I would take a serious step back in acceleration and overall responsiveness. Previous to my G70 I had been a die-hard Forester user, having owned 3 of them over the past 12 years. I did look at Subaru again but the latest version of this SUV has now dropped the XT (turbo version) and honestly I was really disappointed after my test drive, under powered and something felt awkward with the suspension as well, a definite step back from my older XT Foresters.

The 4Runner on the other hand surprised me, okay I was not expecting that pinned to the back of the seat response that a high powered sports sedan is capable of. However the acceleration response was more than adequate for me and I was actually better than expected, I have Sprint Booster on the way and I am not sure I really need it now?

Another area of concern that was brought up by some on the forum was engine and road noise, in my case I find it to be quite low and totally acceptable, so not an issue for me.

A few negative comments, actually more of a mild gripe about what I miss compared to my G70

- No blind spot monitor/ alert, this should be mandatory on all vehicles in my opinion.
- No front camera or proximity alert and rear camera resolution is poor and distorted.
- Low intensity interior lighting, easily fixed by switching to LED bulbs of course.
- No heated steering wheel
- A little too much gloss black trim on the interior.

Future planned mods include a mild lift, upgraded suspension, AT tires and a sleeping platform of some type.

Can’t wait to take it off road and on a long road trip.

Welcome to the 4Runner family! Get ready for tons of research when it comes to tires, lifts and tint lol. Awesome color by the way.

Congratulations and welcome! As you’ve learned, some people on here are a bit overly critical of their 4Runners. I couldn’t be happier with my 2019 TRDOR. Acceleration, ride etc. are good IMO. Enjoy!

I couldn’t agree with you more. Before my 4Runners, I had a Prius. So to me, the 4Runner is a rocket lol.

Congrats!

My wife switches back and forth between her faster EV and our 4runner. Never once does she gripe about the acceleration. Not having to worry about where, how long, weather, terrain, and carrying capacity, ultimately trumps the occasional freeway pull.

I would say the biggest area of improvement are tires and a stiffer suspension. Those are the only lacking things I wish I had addressed right off the dealer lot.

I’ll chime in. I recently purchased a 2021 4R ORP. This is my third Toyota vehicle so I knew what to expect, however the turning radius was a shock to me. It’s so much bigger than the FJ. Not the end of the world. Just a bit annoying.

Congratulations and welcome even though I'm new to the family as well.

I am tempted by the sprint booster but I'm going to see if the Vivid Racing tune would have the power boost as well as a remapped throttle response.

Just looked it up real quick:

4Runner turning diameter = 37.4'
FJ Cruiser turning diameter = 41.8'

So maybe it's just a perception thing? I've always thought mine had a pretty tight radius for its size.

I’ve seen this and it just doesn’t seem right to me, however it is possible that I’m incorrect obviously. The parking here is very tight so maneuvering into the parking spot has become second nature. When I pulled the 4Runner in the first time I nearly took out a post. The FJ does have a 3” lift, but this couldn’t affect the turning radius so I’m stumped. I’m going to have to measure my radius, because it just seems wrong. I’ll post results if anyone’s interested.

Just curious where you got your numbers. Google says FJ Radius is 20.35' (40.7' diameter), while 4Runner Radius is at 18.7' (37.4' diameter).
