3 1/2” Infinity Reference REF-3032cfx Dash Speaker Upgrade

So if you want to upgrade the sound of your stock, non premium stereo for under $100.00, hear is what I think is an easy and worthwhile mod.
I did this today and am very pleased.
Crispers highs and mids. Sounds more like component speakers now.

Infinity Reference REF-3032cfx

Product highlights:
3-1/2" 2-way speakers (pair)
Plus One+ polypropylene woofer cone with hi-roll rubber surround
1/2" balanced textile dome tweeter
in-line high-pass filters included (196 Hz at 6 dB per octave)
True Four Ohm Impedance technology
speaker's 3-ohm impedance combines with speaker wire impedance for a 4-ohm load
compatible with virtually all factory or aftermarket car stereos
handles up to 25 watts RMS (75 watts peak power)
frequency response: 85-21,000 Hz
sensitivity: 91 dB
top-mount depth: 1-7/16"
grilles not included
warranty: 1 year

Features
Plus One+ Woofer Cones: Each speaker uses a cone larger than other speakers of the same size. This is accomplished by using a unique basket design and hi-roll surround. The Plus One+ design offers greater bass output and an increase in efficiency.

Tweeter: Each speaker has a balanced dome tweeter. A semi-dome tweeter has a dome placed inside a cone. Balanced dome tweeters are semi-dome tweeters with equal reproduction area given the cone and dome portions of the tweeter.

High-Output Design: The 3Ω voice coil design compensates for the high in-line resistance of small gauge factory wiring, extracting more power from factory (or aftermarket) receivers.

Crossover: The included 270 microfarad capacitors are 1st order high pass crossovers (6 dB/octave); the crossover point is approximately 196 Hz. One capacitor is wired in-line with the positive input of each speaker. For best results, solder speaker wire terminated with quick slides (item number 120FQS10PK, sold separately) to both ends of the capacitor, then insulate the assembly.

I purchased a pair of RED WOLF Car Front Center Dash Pro Tweeter Audio Speaker Wiring Harness Replacement & soldered the 270 microfarad capacitors in line on the positive wire.

Purchased new OEM brackets so I could cut them and use one end from each to install the speakers. ( I retained my originals in the event I would have to replace them)
86161-35030
86161-35040

Speaker covers were modded as well. I removed the lip from the underside of each cover. The remaining lip was only 1/8”
I used my dremel tool.

Thanks for this! I replaced all of my speakers with Infinity Reference a while back and have been hesitant about the dash speakers, but this put me at ease with those pictures of the cut brackets. I wasn’t sure where to cut and didn’t want to chop stuff up. Seems like the other information people put out there just aren’t as clear to me.

I thought you might prefer this mod since you weren't satisfied with the Subaru tweeter exchange on your new 4R. I am considering this also, and would buy extra mounting brackets, as you did, to keep the oem brackets just in case.

I have a couple of questions - where did you purchase the speakers & RED WOLF Car Front Center Dash Pro Tweeter Audio Speaker Wiring Harness Replacements? and also, could you elaborate on these two paragraphs, for a non audiophile:

Crossover: The included 270 microfarad capacitors are 1st order high pass crossovers (6 dB/octave); the crossover point is approximately 196 Hz. One capacitor is wired in-line with the positive input of each speaker. For best results, solder speaker wire terminated with quick slides (item number 120FQS10PK, sold separately) to both ends of the capacitor, then insulate the assembly.

Are the capacitors that you soldered into the wiring harnesses included with the speakers? I had not seen that step in other posts on installing these speakers...

Thanks!

Thanks!
So, the 270 microfarad capacitors block out the bass so as not to damage these speakers and yes, they come with the speakers.

I cut the positive wire on each of the Red Wolf Harness enough to solder the capacitor in each pos line. Shrink tubing to cover the capacitor and each of the solder connections as shown in the photos.

So the top harness is complete with shrink tubing on the capacitor and the lower harness is just to show the capacitor inline with the shrink tubing on the solder connections and not on the capacitor. It was completed after photo to look just like the top harness.

Hope this helps!

Great upgrade, I got my speakers for under $60 and built harnesses with parts off of the old tweeters.

I saw the info on doing that as well, but decided to keep the OEM parts intact, in case I had any issues and had to replace them....
BTW, I see there has been an increase on the prices.

Absolutely. Exactly what I needed, thanks. Now to order parts. It seems the same speakers are offered on Amazon for $59.95...

@Saker , did you trim the back side of the speaker grilles because they rubbed the new speakers, or just to allow the 2-way speakers to sound better?

So they would not touch the speakers.
Removing as much of the back probably helped with the sound, but can’t be certain.
I can tell you, they are a huge improvement!

@glwood54

Before you remove your dash speaker grill, place your hand over the grill to see if you feel any air being moved by the OEM speakers. Once you do your upgrade, do the same thing and see if you can feel any difference. (this is best done by playing the same song at a specific place in the song)

There was an increase... I paid $56.95. We live so close to each other maybe we should pair up on our mods and save on shipping... what's next for you?

What setting to optomize the sound with the infinity cfx3032? My car's default was set in the middle for tremble/mid/bass. I just move it one slot higher on all three.

I'd say adjust until it sounds good to you.
