A quick electrical question

So I would like to wire up my license plate light on my new bumper and have no clue how to wire it up, Do I tap into brake light somewhere? I mean its a red wire and black wire I just don't want to short something.

Easy job. All the latest 4Runners come with a trailer wiring plug in. Just get a four pin trailer adapter and plug it in. UHaul sells them and anywhere you get trailer supplies and hitches. Amazon.com: Hopkins 48205 4 Wire Flat Connector Set with Splice Connectors: Automotive

If you also pull a trailer, just get a Y splitter like this one: Amazon.com: MICTUNING Universal 4 Way Flat Y-Splitter Plug and Play Adapter Extension Harness for LED Tailgate Light Bar and Trailer Lights: Automotive

As @fkheath said you can plug into the 4-pin trailer socket with a cable to break out the GND and Taillights wires to your license plate light wires, or splice into the actual wiring as described on the other forum,
License Plate LED Light Addition for Hitch Mounted Tire Carrier | Toyota 4Runner Forum [4Runners.com]

Make sure you test the taillight to determine which is the +12 lead and the GND lead.

One more thing. After you wire everything up and it checks out to your satisfaction, remove the plug from the trailer socket, and load the contacts with dielectric grease before re-installing the plug. That will keep any water out. However make sure it’s all dry first, use a hairdryer if necessary.
