tire pressure sensors/standard
2019 4Runner SR5
I'm looking at getting some very slightly used OEM rims to mount my winter tires on, but they don't have the tire pressure sensors.
Those tire pressure sensors are $45/each.
Can I just do without the tire pressure sensors? Will the warning light go off?
Dumb question, but this is the first vehicle I've had with tire pressure sensors and I don't know anything about them.
Thx

I run my 2011 Limited with the OEM 20 inch rims and the TPMS sensors in the summer.
For the winter, I switch to OEM TRD Off-Road 17 inch rims and winter tires with no TPMS sensors.
The TPMS warning light flashes upon start up in the winter, and then will stay lit while the vehicle is operating. There is no audible (noisy) alarm.
To avoid distraction, some people will place a small piece of black tape over the warning light when they do not have TPMS sensors in their tires.

I have run my 2nd set of wheels and tires with no tpms for years. I just put a piece of tape over the light.
I bought 4 trail wheels for my 2014 4runner from a 2018 4runner and they have the tpms sensors on them. I was hoping to use these sensors on my 2014 but I am being told they are incompatible. They are for a 2018-2019 only.
If you are interested in them make me a reasonable offer. They would have to be reprogrammed every time you swap the wheels and tires though.

I had my TPMS light come on a couple weeks ago. I checked all the tires with a gauge and they were fine. Turns out, after a little research, the TPMS sensors last about 7 - 8 years before the internal battery goes bad. I don't know about newer 4Runners but my 2013 will not indicate which tire is setting off the light. You'd think for a 40K vehicle it would; plus include the spare. A cheap Chevy van, we had at work, had a little display of each tires pressure - comeon Toyota! Replacing the sensors isn't cheap - probably about $50+ per wheel. With just a light, I'll never know when the other sensors go bad; or how many are reporting. The piece of black tape over the light is probably the best solution!

Newer models report each tire and can be reprogrammed from the dash. Still no spare unless you get a limited.

I ended up buying the wheels, they've got tires on them that look pretty good (maybe 15,000 in wear, so lots left). I think I'll run them with these tires which will last about a year then put on the take-offs and do TPMS at that time.

I asked the Tires Plus guy here - and they won't do sensors you take in. They will replace with their sensors and program. I did find on Amazon a set that just screws on the valve stem and comes with a reader. I don't know what each weighs or if there would be a balance problem.

This is my first vehicle with tire pressure sensors, so not to familiar with them. What happens when the internal battery goes out? Does the dash light come on? Does that also mean that they are now worthless and need replacing?
My 2012 is approaching about 9 years of age. Also, I want to get new tires this summer for an extended road trip in the fall. Would it be foolish to expect 9 year old TPS to work long enough to be practical with the new tires or should I just get 4 new ones along with the new tires? I'm kind of old school and bought my first Toyota 4x4 back in 1974. I've never had an issue not having TPS since then and if I need new ones and it's a couple of hundred bucks for 4 installed I'm thinking of possibly skipping it. Would appreciate your thoughts.

on my 2020, i placed my spare without a sensor on the rear and the tire light came on. So, i installed a new sensor i bought for $22 and relearned it into the car and worked out fine. please note the 2020 monitors the tire pressure on each wheel and where it is located. In the dash, i can see the pressure on each tire. If you have the old version which don't monitor each tire, you might be okay. would be best though to have a tire sensor for safety.

This is the same brand sensor i installed on my spare with an alloy rim on my 2020. bought the moresensor NX-S009. Also, my 2005 4runner's original sensor is still working though. it's showing thought that 2 of them now have a low battery charge.

7-8 years? Says who? My '08 T4R still has the original TPMS sensors which are still functional. Do the math.

A simple search gets gets 7-8 years and 5 -10 years. I did one last week and one just now; so there is some variance in the answers. Either way it's a battery so it will have a lifespan. You probably get more battery life in warmer areas.
Once the light comes on (at least on my 2013 SR5) it stays on. You might be able to turn it off with Techstream - but I doubt it due to it being a safety notification.

I ended up by the wheels and tires and having tire pressure sensors put on.
So I've got summer and winter wheels and tires, and an extra set of summer tires with about 13,000 wear on them
It worked out I guess.
