I am curious if there are any Canadian perspectives in here for recent 4Runner purchases... I know our market tends to be a bit different than the US. I want to buy a 4Runner but I am reading these posts from the US side and getting anxiety.

I have looked around and the 2021s seem pretty low inventory. There are a few available in the province but none near me. I spoke to two dealers, one where I live now and one in the city I will be moving to in about a month. They both had none in stock, and basically told me I can do a factory order, it will likely be a 2022 and could take 3-5 months to show up from the time of order.

I've never factory ordered a vehicle before, always buy off the lot, so I am wondering a couple things:

1. I am not expecting to get any real discount off MSRP... But I am reading a lot of US posts here about dealers wanting MORE than MSRP, is that common to Canadian dealers also?

2. How do you even negotiate in a situation like this? I am not expecting much negotiation on the price of the 4Runner, but if there is a 3-5 month wait how do things work with a trade? Do you negotiate the price of the trade at the time or order or at the time of delivery? I don't want to be in a situation where the truck comes in and then the dealer lowballs too much on my trade and that throws a wrench into the deal. But on the other hand I don't feel like a dealer will be able to guarantee me a trade price on a vehicle that I might still be driving for 3-5 months while the new on comes in.

I won't be in the position to make a concrete order until later in the summer anyway.

(I hope this isn't too far off topic for the thread, I can't make my own threads yet)

Put a deposit down in Huntsville, Alabama last week May on a 2021 TRD ORP with KDSS, nautical blue.

Haven't heard a thing in 2 months.

Contacted dealer twice. They have no idea when i may get one.

Put a deposit down on a dealer allocated Red ORP with KDSS last week, they never gave me a solid build date...just that it was this week with a rough delivery date of August 18th. Waiting for follow up from the dealership at this point. Kind of funny, the whole reason I am getting another 4Runner is that I got tired of waiting for a build date for my Bronco (no date in site, no VIN, dealers guess next spring maybe)....at least I have a VIN for the 4runner, that alone made me crazy excited!!

Build date was May 14th, arrived at the port June 9th.

Delivery date was initially July 16th - 21st, then delayed to the 19th - 26th, now delayed to July 26th - August 2nd. The train it's on was last seen in Little Rock, AR on the 21st.

Dealer is south of Nashville, so hopefully it's here soon.

I put a deposit down on July 9. The dealer gave me a spec sheet with a vin number. He said the vehicle was to go into production that day and said he expects it to arrive on the lot in “mid-August”.

Looks like the Western regions get the KDSS much more frequently. I was able to deposit down on one in Albuquerque, NM. The california and denver (mountain) regions may be worth looking into. Only downside is shipping or a cross country trip. Maybe the drive would be a nice adventure.

Find someone offering MSRP would be my suggestion. I had a friend also suggest reporting to Toyota citing Ford trying to crack down on the mark ups.

So you gave up on the Alabama dealership and driving to New Mexico?
Did the NM dealer give you a build date?

Yeah, alabama just gave me my deposit back and pretty much said "good luck".

So i was actually going to deposit down with a San Diego dealership because it looked like they got KDSS on routine basis. I started just looking up cities with direct and/or cheap flights and searching within that area hoping to get something that wasn't 24hrs drive time.

I got lucky and a buyer was backing out of their nautical blue TRDORP and KDSS. There is a delivery date already scheduled and its allocated to that dealership. Its not EXACTLY what I want but close enough. It has the blacked out toyota emblem and badging but still the chrome valances and front grill pinstripes but I figured I could match that up somehow.

Nice, enjoy your trip. Did you just pick a state and called all the dealerships?

The most frustrating part is the lack of updates from the regional reps. Emailing Toyota is useless and fb messages are ignored.
If they just gave me an idea when they will build kdss for this region, it wouldn't be as bad. My dealer said they got the order. Confirmation of dealer order and an idea of build date is all I ask at this point.

Pretty much. After San Diego said they could get one but it would be a while, I started calling dealerships closer and closer to Louisiana that I could get easy flights to for a drive back. I think the key is finding the region that the options are commonly allocated to. Don't be deceived by the salesperson saying "yeah, we can get that". Maybe they can, but if its only 1 vehicle every 3 - 6 months your odds are not good at all. That's what happened to me with the Alabama dealer. They told me "no problem, we get KDSS". Wellllll, turns out yeah, they get it but only a couple every 6 months... maybe.

Waiting on a confirmation of the delivery date (i think i was told end of august). If you get lucky you may find a dealership with the model you want already in the pipeline and wont have to wait as long. San Diego told me that they car I would be depositing down would be a 2022 so you may be out that far.

Thanks for the info. That's more info than what I got from Toyota at this point.
At least the 5th gen is being built for another year. I don't mind waiting. I just want some kind of update. At this point I am expecting a 2022 model. Who knows, maybe Toyota will show the 6th gen soon.
