I had previously installed a Qi wireless charger based on Sure74s posts on this forum but when I got my new phone I decided I would try to install a MagSafe charger so I could charge much faster. I figured it would also have the added benefit of making the phone more secure and not having to worry whether it was lined up correctly for charing.
The first thing I did was purchase a Aukey 21w car charger with USBC and Power Delivery 3.0, that way it would put out enough juice to fast charge over the MagSafe. I opened that up so I could separate the connections:
Then I soldered the contact points to the back of the 12v adapter, as described in Sure74s's post:
Then I reassembled the charger (for the most part) to keep the components protected. Ultimately, I probably could have gotten rid of a lot of the excess but if I had to do it over again, I would still do it this way.
Then I made a whole in the back of the cubby with a Dremel that was large enough to fit the usbc cable of the MagSafe charger through:
Then I used a glue gun to mount the Aukey charger and the excess MagSafe cabling to the back of the cubby:
Then I mounted the puck portion of the MagSafe charger to the cubby with a command strip:
At first I was going to place the MagSafe puck underneath the cubby like my Qi charger had been but after trying it, I wasn't satisfied with the connection - especially if the phone was in a case. I was going to make a larger whole in the bottom of the cubby and mount the MagSafe puck flush, however, thus far I've actually enjoyed it being raised a bit. It makes it easier to grab the phone and I think it helps the phone stay a little cooler while charging. I may just order a new cubby and give it a try to see how I like it but for now I'm very happy with this.
Thanks again to Sure74 for the instructions on the install of the Qi charger which was the inspiration and instruction for this.
