2016 vs 2021 Shift Point Differences

Hi,

I recently upgraded from a 2016 ORP w/KDSS to a 2021 TRD Pro. Overall, I love the Pro - especially the ride quality.

When I had my 2016 I always read about people complaining that the transmission was always hunting gears, especially on slight inclines at 70+ mph. However, I never really seemed to have this issue - downshifts seemed to come late and hold. My Pro goes back and forth at times between gears, much more frequently than my ORP.

It's possible I am imagining it ... but I don't think so. When I had the ORP I consciously thought it actually worked pretty well, and this certainly seems different.

Anyone else ever notice inconsistencies with shift points between vehicles? The ORP even had KO2's, and KDSS certainly adds some weight. Maybe the 2016 was broken ...

Anyway, love the truck overall - just something I observed.

Trans shifting behavior is learned by the ECM over time. It adapts to the way the vehicle is driven as well as conditions.

If this is a new vehicle, then it will likely feel the same over time.

They did make changes to the ECM for 20/21 - it's why none of the superchargers will currently work on those years. Dunno if that would affect transmission shifting.

how many miles on your 2016? I bet its the fresh transmission fluid that's improved the shifting.

I feel like my 2020 pro hunts....I recently switched to 33s and thought that may effect the hunting....not really....
Mostly in cruise control, it will hunt between 70 and 75....if I want it to hold in 5th, I need to be running 77 or so.
Its annoying, makes me want to get a supercharger.
When using foot as throttle its managable.

According to Toyota's product materials, the transmission ratios are the exact same for the earlier and later 5th gens, so I feel like it probably is the ECM learning your behavior that makes it feel different. You start with a clean slate when you buy new, and over time, the ECM adjusts it more to your driving style.
