My question came from that point of view as I already know the answer, and it’s surprising. It’s a little challenging to make an apples to apples comparison due to trim levels, but let’s use this example as a starting point.
2020 Tundra SR5 Crewmax 4x4 has a payload of 1560 lbs for a curb weight of 5640 lbs.
2020 4Runner SR5 4x4 has a payload of 1625 lbs for a curb weight of 4675 lbs.
Yes you can get eek out a few more lbs of payload if you go to the stripper 4x2 Tundra, but that’s not really a valid comparison.
If you need to tow something, sure, Tundra hands down but otherwise there’s no advantage and a lot of disadvantages.
