I Need Your Advice On Used 4Runner I Found

2018 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road

$38,000 (reduced to 35,000)
79,868 miles
JTEBU5JR7J5543644 | 2018 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off Road for sale in York, SC

Only thing I hate is the 80k miles on it. From the Carfax report looks like it was used as a commuter by the owner for two years, then traded in to the original place of sale. They then put new tires on (in the picture I guess), and could not sell it. It was sold at an auto auction to Evans Auto in South Carolina. Rockstar XD series wheels with Falken Wildpeak A/T tires. I like the Grey/Black two tone style of it. It was also serviced regularly from what I can tell.

I would love to get your guys' opinion / advice though.

It's a bit pricey, but if you don't get it someone else will lol. As far as miles go it's not a huge deal. These things were built to last.

I dunno - that's a lot of money and a lot of miles. I would, for sure, want to see vehicle history, maint and accident records. I'd also want to do a full inspection; including an underneath inspection. It appears both new and used vehicle prices are inflated due to supply shortages. If it were me, I'd wait for things to settle down if I could.

It is a bit pricey. Just save a few more thousands and get a new 2021 4runner.

I have a 2018 ORP and pre-covid I thought I was driving it a lot at 19,000/year, no commuting. Now I’m at 49,000. So 80,000 sounds like a lot to me.
But if you plug that truck into KBB.com the trade-in value is about 36K and private sale is about 38K. So it’s probably priced correctly, if it was properly maintained and no flaws.

But I always buy new.

The miles absolutely should not scare you, from a durability standpoint. I have a 2019 TRDOR with 65k, so about on par with yours. That's due to a 90-mile round trip every day for work, so maybe the PO had a similar scenario, which is 'easy' miles. Plus, if the tires really are new and are decent tires, that's $1000 right there that you would otherwise spend.

If you like the vehicle and trim appointments (wheels/tires, black pieces, etc), then just decide if you like it enough to buy. It does look nice, IMO. Maybe you would buy it at a lower price. If so, offer that and stick to it. I don't think you would ever regret buying the truck, but maybe you would regret spending the money. That is probably the decision you need to settle in your mind.

Best wishes!

I was in a semi-similar situation when purchasing my 2017 TRD OR. I purchased in September of 2019 and vehicle had 65k miles and priced at $32k recently marked down from $34k. Vehicle was used as a dealer vehicle in town, all maintenance done at the dealership, very well maintained.

Price was under blue book, carfax and records verified what the dealer claimed. I had it looked over again, inspected as much as I could, and went with my gut. Sure the miles were high, but it was well maintained and I take pride in my own maintenance. So far no issues with the truck. Granted, I lucked out here where someone else may not. I got a great TRD OR at a price I could afford. No regrets.

Amen to that. Also driving more since COVID, not less. I bought a 4Runner (my username says it all) but haven’t taken delivery of it yet. It’s due the first week of May.

I had some lease options that were pretty attractive but I am looking for a reliable vehicle that I can put the miles on until the value reaches zero.

This time around, I picked something without abysmal depreciation in case my situation changes and it’s better to bail out on the “‘til death do us part” plan.

Hope I made the right choice. It sure looked and drove very nicely!

For $5k more you get zero miles. To finance that extra $5k @3% is gonna cost you $1500. Over 5 years that's $300 per year to finance that extra $5k to get a new one. I'd go get one with zero miles.

Call 100k miles 1/3 of the life of the vehicle. Sure it will go more then 300k miles but do you want to pay nearly new prices for that many miles. Did they 10k oil change or 5k oil change it?

They did 5,10,15,20k and multiple services after that, but I understand your point. I didn't know a new one was only 40k thought they are about 45k. I'm gonna look at that.

My bad didn't see the reduced to $35k- thought they asking $38k - but they are like $43k but you might find an SR5 for $36/$37

My theory is buy what you really want new, drive it for 10+ years, sell to a private party and then buy the next Gen 4Runner.
You will really enjoy yours.

BTW, well maintained 4Runners have historically held great value. If you don’t kill it or let the frame rust away you’ll never reach value = 0.

Here's some food for thought if you're buying used. For $35K you can buy a used 2014+ Lexus GX460 with about 50k miles on it all day long. You can even find Lexus Certified ones at that price. For the same price you get a V8, 6spd transmission, supple leather, heated and cooled seats, plus a bunch of other niceties. The 4Runner market is inflated and the GX460's are the value play in used market.

Personally if I were to do it all over again I probably would have picked a GX460 over a 4Runner. However in 2016 there was barely any 3rd party aftermarket support for the GX's. In the past 2 years though it has really boomed and people are recognizing the GX460 is a luxury 4Runner and with similar off-road chops. I'd say if you're not really doing any rock crawling the GX is a much better option. I can see a debate about new 4R vs new GX460 but on the used market the GX460 depreciated much faster so you can really get some good bargains.

Answer: Fly to Dallas, Houston, or Atlanta (seemingly hot spots for soccer moms to buy GX460's and turn them in when the lease is up), buy Lexus certified, and drive it home. Plus no rust.
