Adding Oil To AC System

Anyone have experience adding PAG46 to the AC system? I rubbed a hole through my AC line and needed to replace it. That's been done, but I noticed I lost some oil. I read that the condenser line has 1oz of PAG46 in it, but I'm not sure if I read incorrectly or not.

Trying to figure out how that would be added.

Does anyone have any info or diagrams on this? As well as recharging the system?

Thanks

You can buy oil or freon with oil at pretty much any automotive chain parts store. Possibly Walmart.

So the oil that was lost wasn't a separate oil? I took it was that was oil for the system without the freon? Maybe I understood that incorrectly. This is my first time dealing with anything AC related.

The oil is in with the Freon, but is normally added separately. It circulates throughout the system to lubricate the A/C compressor.

Likely, you did not loose that much oil. It is added through the ports used to recharge the A/C system, but requires special equipment to do so.

First, you must evacuated the system to get ALL air and ALL moisture out of the system (and old Freon). You need an A/C vacuum to do that. The law requires you to not let any Freon escape into the air, thus the old Freon that is removed must be recycled.

Then you need a set of gauges and hoses, with the appropriate fittings to attach to the A/C ports, to measure the pressure in the system so you get the right amount of Freon into it.

Because of the specialized equipment needed, and the requirement to recycle the Freon, a vacuum, gauges, hoses, etc., it is best to leave the recharge to a mechanic shop.

Refrigerant

Which refrigerant are you using? R134A or the new R1234yf? Is there a label under hood that says PAG46? Don't mix up the oil.

A friend of mine has all the correct hoses and things to do it, just wanted to make sure I had the correct stuff before doing so.

Mine uses the R134A and the PAG46 oil is what goes with that, but it sounds like if I get the oil mixed with the freon I'll be fine.

You most likely don't need oil. A little will get blown out with the refrigerant, but not enough to matter. Just pull vacuum and recharge with specified amount of refrigerant.
