Is my shock leaking

I just replaced my leaking XREAS with Dobinsons IMS on a 2012 Limited w 110K.

Haven’t driven it enough to tell a big difference. It’s a bit stiffer and helped with the nosedive on braking but haven’t pulled the camper with it since the change.

it looks oily, but there's only the one picture to look at. have you tried wiping it down, is the film oily or mostly just muddy

shocks sometimes mist or weep. misting is considered normal, weeping is also considered normal (depends who you ask). I'd try and wipe it down as clean as you can to see if there's an oil stream coming down that left side when there's no dirt/mud in the way

take it for a ride over some speed bumps and see what happens

Third - If you do need to change it, you have two options. Replace with like-for-like XREAS system. OR Rip it out and lift it with kings and you will be at same cost, more clearance and longer lasting shocks. I know this because I had the dealer replace 2 XREAS systems. Its garbage for longevity.

Fourth - if I have my old XREAS for sale :P if you want to make an offer

What would be equivalent to XREAS?

bilstein 5100s are a popular choice, if you can find them right now and you can keep stock height. if you want lift there's so many choices, there's a couple youtube vids on this and threads as well

wow I happened to take a peek at my xreas shocks because I had the rig in the garage and thought of this thread... surprise surprise mine are definitely leaking, no drips though but there is oil on the shock so it must be a very slow leak. talk about good (or bad?) timing

152k miles original xreas - cant complain. we will see what the toyota dealer says monday am. since it's oil leaking they will probably say to replace the one line, and since it's original they will probably suggest I do the other front and rear absorbers to be consistent with the new ones

I like the xreas - I'm considering paying to replace it even if it's expensive. I'd consider bilstein 5100s or fox 2.0 but no one seems to have them and waiting for months for product isn't really an option

Unhappy Me too, I have leaking shocks on my 2018 4Runner Limited V6.

This thing is leaking @51,000 miles.

This is my second 4Runner. I am waiting for further diagnosis from Toyota Service. I do have extended warranty, so I am waiting to know if this is covered.
I love the 4Runner, I feel like this is too early to be replaced because I don't drive off-road. I used it mainly on highways and city. It's a TOTOTA, you know.

My first one is a 2003 4runner V8. I still own it @256,000 miles (No shocks replacement on it).
The old one runs better than the new one. It's bizarre but true. (Could be because the old one is a V8??).

I'm puzzled, any advice?

See photos!

EXACT same thing happened with mine, bought used at 36K. At 50k service, front left component of XREAS leaking and a "master tech" needed to come look to see if it was just the leaking one being replaced, or the entire system. Told us that the whole system did not qualify and they would replace the leaking component. It was clear nobody knew what they were doing in the dealership when I was answering my questions I got from researching here. All paid for under covered warranty but still has me questioning if they just did that to try and outlast the warranty.

Any feedback from anyone else?

I'm not a fan of XREAS long term, but it does ride nicely when it works. Be sure to check all of the corners before your warranty runs out and if one starts leaking (and it will) after the warranty period, jut replace with 5100's and be done with the whole system.
