cons:
1. poor MPG
2. slower than a turtle.
3. aftermarket is expensive.
pros:
1. extremely reliable
2. low depreciation
3. comfortable w/ decent legroom for front and rear.
4. good aftermarket support
5. excellent all around off-roader (if you get a trim w/ a locker).
6. decent cargo space
7. easy to park, easy to drive and quiet. Good all around size for city life and offroading (not too big/wide, and not too small).
Basically, the 4runner is the camry of the 4x4 suv world. You can drive it into the ground, in relative comfort, and you will never worry about it leaving you stranded on the side of the road or in the dirt.

As someone who grew up with a disdain for such a pedestrian car, I would take major offense to the Camry comparison if you didn’t add the “4x4” distinction lol.
Also, I want to counter a CON by arguing that with such a ubiquitous platform, the aftermarket parts are as expensive as you want them to be.

i just like it the way it is. for as long as it does not get me stranded in the mountains, i'm good.
i hope they could add a manual start, just like when you have a manual shift. if you ran out of battery, you can just push start it.
i remember when i was younger, when my dad's car don't start because of the dead battery, we just push start it and still can go.

Just averaged 21 MPG on a 550 mile trip.
Bought with 50k miles, now has 152k. Never left me stranded which is important because sometimes I am 9 hours from home. Basic maintenance only but add in the NSS and 2 front calipers.
Quality is fantastic, as is reliability. Some of the other guys talk about solid axles and removable tops and such, but I like mine the way it is. I have a JK on 37's for that.
It's my work road trip vehicle. The ground clearance and the real 4wd help in the NE, but the frame rust doesn't, and I wash the undercarriage every chance I get. My frame is still decent but I have no doubt that would go before the engine or trans or electrical systems do.
All in all, when it's time to replace I'll either buy another 5th gen or a GX460.
It has plenty of power if you put your foot in it. I work in the auto industry and the first time my old boss rode in it and I got on it he goes "Oh wow it has a V8 too?"

Bought new with 5 miles. 18.0 MPG over 2000 miles driven since then. Gas is cheaper being able to use regular grade so that’s a relief.
4Runner is living proof that doors don’t have to be heavy for the cabin to be quiet. It may clang like a tin can when the door handle is released, but the inside is rattle free and quiet as a crypt.
Love it!
No sense in Dynamat or further damping the panels because it’s already as quiet as my Range Rover with acoustic glass. I’m not tearing into a new vehicle because of “perception” of quality (heavy, dampened doors)
It’s the perfect size for my wife and I, rides like a lifted truck (short wheelbase?) and is overall so fun as a daily driver.

In addition to all of the other mentioned pros, made in Japan Toyota is best Toyota.

YES!!!! Quality of Japan made Toyota from the Tahara plant is unbeatable! Let’s hope 6th Gen will come out of same plant in Tahara👍

Coming from a 15 GX 460 with a Dobinson lift, we absolutely love our 21 TRD Off Road Premium. We do miss some of the safety features such as the parking sensors but we will manage. Love that it uses regular gas and is very comfortable for us.
We have zero regrets and fully expect this made in Japan vehicle to be very reliable for a long time to come.

I’m getting 20MPG on my recent trip from LA to San Diego and back.
2021 ORP with 7000 miles
I’m sure it gets better as they age.

Quality:?
Quality of the drive train and the other bits that actually count seems to be
quite high. These particular Toyota's are still made in Japan and it shows.
The paint, the electronics and amount/quality of other features(infotainment/NAV/automatic climate control(lack there of unless you go TRD Pro or Limited)/BLIS/Radar cruise/LED lighting/etc) ... for what you are paying for this thing is kind of terrible frankly.(I have an ORP Premium and it was not exactly cheap.)
I don't mind and even like the 4.0 but the ancient 5-speed feels like a slight knowing that the Tundra/Tacoma and GX all get six gears and they ain't exactly brand new models... also a little salty about not having the V8 option.
Gas Mileage:?
I get 18 in town and I have 275 BFG's E-rated(55lbs per tire) with a 3" lift. I got less in my Jeep Wranlger which had similar power and weighed less. No complaints here.
Price:?
4runner is not a good value proposition in any trim. So if you want value and economy, the Rav-4 or Highlander are way better choices.
I bought a 4runner for the proven reliability and the platform(body-on-frame) because I knew that I wanted something capable offroad(former Jeep owner) and mod-friendly....but also still livable day to day. The 4runner is really good at weekend warrior stuff and pretty cushy Mon-Fri.

You can listen to luxury car doors “thunk” all day long in Rovers, BMW, and Mercedes but I wouldn’t trust a new one on a cross country trip!
4Runner is where it’s at. Big, Fisher-Price controls and dead reliable tested platform. 4.0 V6 and a 5 speed trans.

Invest a few hours with some Dynomat on the doors; mine thunk shut like my old 1990’s Audi at this point. Lovely.

Seeing that this thread was started two months ago...and my 2014 is literally the same vehicle as the 2020-21s...(if i wanted radar i'd buy an F-16)
Ill say that all of your Cons are valid to an extent. but...
the mpg is always harped on, except when i compare it to the Ford, Chev, et al, those vehicles mpg are usually only 1-3 better than the T4R
as far as everything else, not one dime has been spent on vehicle repair, only normal maint....i can tell you that all of those cons can be acceptable when it has meant all i have to worry about is getting in, turning the key, and driving away. on road/off road, towing, snow, dry, road trips...the ONLY thing that has failed are the auto locks, and my thumbs still work so im good.

I'll start with CONS
Gas Mileage
I haven't had mine for too long, but it is my daily driver and I would say that while the gas mileage does suck..I knew that going into it. I've actually been impressed that I've gotten over 20mpg around my hometown at times though. There are two different ways that I can get to work. The shortest way has about 10 stoplights and I average between 14-16mpg (according to the 4runner) depending on how many lights I hit. The longest way is basically double the mileage, but only has 1 stoplight and I routinely get about 21mpg. It seems to me so far, you want to be in that 40-55 mph range as long as possible to "reap" the most gas mileage benefits.
No Auto Headlights (at least on my 21 TRD ORP)
I don't understand how a vehicle has auto high beams, but doesn't have auto headlights. What? My 2008 car has that feature. WTF? This bugs me more than the gas mileage...and I'll fully admit I'm lazy and have just gotten complacent with turning my headlights on when I need them.
5 Speed Transmission
Not a huge deal for me yet (haven't towed anything), but you'll notice it being sluggish at times. Definitely don't pull out in front of someone or try to race anyone.
2.1A USB Charging Inputs
Takes my iPhone a good bit of time to charge. I bought a couple 12v Anker Chargers that work much better.
PROS
It will blow your mind. Enough said.
Look, this is a badass vehicle. We all know it, or we wouldn't be here. I've driven a number of SUV's, even other Toyota's (Highlander, Sequoia, even Tundra), but the 4R just always seemed to be the perfect balance of size, performance, and bling to me for an SUV. I've driven a couple rental 4R's when traveling and they performed great, and just felt solid for being older vehicles...one time we even had to drive through hurricane flood waters and over and around debris for a few days, and also drove over some pretty loose sand at a beach when I thought we might spin out some. The 4R crushed all tasks. I was very impressed.
Anyways, I finally purchased a 21 TRD ORP, and have to say...it's exceeded my expectations so far. I went down a rabbit hole of reading reviews and watching YouTube videos, all that stuff. And admittedly, I haven't towed anything or done any serious off-roading yet, but did take it down a gravel road with 6 creek crossings...muddy/gravel and water crossings probably 16'ish inches deep at most with a decent base...I've got the stock tires which aren't real AT tires at all, and they did fine on that road, but I would not trust them in any capacity for any serious real deal off-roading...or even the road I did without a buddy for that matter.
I've got no complaints with the entertainment/navigation stuff...I'm sure it could be better and faster, but it works and does what you really need it to. The speakers actually sound really good too for factory speakers IMO. I listen to all kinds of different genre's and you can dial in a decent sound for anything really. Plenty of bass and kick.
Back seats fold down nearly flat (not common for some SUV's) so it is great for camping/overlanding for 1-2 people, plenty of cargo space, and you can roll down the back window which is AMAZING. We basically live in the country, and have to haul our own recycling and trash at times. Yep...that feature is amazing. LOL Airs everything out quickly.
Anyways, I forgot this was supposed to be a PROS/CONS list and not just my review of my 4R and then me rambling on a bunch and so on.
TLDR: If you want to buy one, and can buy one, buy one...it will make sense, plus there are much worse ways to invest your money. Hell, you could've probably made money if you bought one a year ago and sold it or traded it in. It's getting crazy out there.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but, using a rental vehicle to be your example is about the worst choice you could have made. Go look at a used 4Runner sitting on a lot or look at a friends. Rentals get beat on and are not very well cared for.
