I don't think there is any reason why you can't install a stock locker in an SR5. Same for the shift handle. You might have to get creative with the wiring - I don't know that you can reprogram the ECM to recognize these things. The parts will physically fit tho.

I'm going out on a limb here, but if you're asking these kind of questions, I'm assuming you're not going to be doing the install work yourself. If you're going to have to pay someone to make this swap for you, it will be cheaper to just buy the TRD Off Road. Replacing the rear diff is probably going to run you $3k alone.

If you are looking at an F-250 and you even remotely need that kind of power/hauling/towing, the 4Runner just isn't gonna do it for you.

my suv before the 4runner was a 2011 ford expedition. Loved it, but i wanted something smaller at the moment.
my other vehicle in the family is a ford raptor. Hard to compare them, they both have their forte. I had a bronco on order but i might forget that all together for something else in the future.

I'm with you, I would have bought my TRD OR, (non premium), with vinyl floors, manual transmission, crank windows and manual locks if it was an option. We are in the minority now days brother.

Haha. I hope someone laughed. I bought this thing recently from an auction and it's just been a PITA since I got it. Bone stock down to the tires with just over 100k miles. I thought - they're so popular, this one is completely stock - never tuned, never modified, how bad can a powerstroke be? - pretty bad it turns out.

The 4Runner is overdue for an update. I can sympathize with the OP. And I'm tired of waiting for something new. I'm frustrated that we don't get the 8 or 10 speed transmissions, we don't get newer engines, etc. And reliability isn't a good excuse for not updating those. It's just lazyness or apathy from Toyota. But I also appreciate the reliability. In a perfect world, I could buy a 4Runner spec'd just how I want it - 2 row, 5.0L v8, 10 speed AT, LC200 running gear, LX AHC system optimized for extra long travel. But that's just not in the cards. Ford will basically let you customize its models to the rough equivalent of that. The transit van series really impressed me with the option sets. I just wish they'd spend a bit more time on the engineering side.

NEVER BUY A 1st YEAR VEHICLE... there are gonna be TONS of gremlins on this new Bronco... the second year will have them all fixed.

Also, dont buy an SR5 ... get a model with all the bells and whistles... like Crawl Control

OP is the guy that starts huffing and puffing when he gets told that he needs to go home and do something online before showing up in person.

I think that all led to Ford making their own motor (6.7L) vs it being made by Navistar International.

I've got the 6.4L (the one after the 6.0) in a F350. Been good, but needed a delete. Been looking at a new TRD OR as a second vehicle.

That's still a lot cheaper and easier to do than buying an SR5 and then trying to swap in the e-locker and manual lever transfer case.
Per the dealer anything other than the standard SR5 has the push button. He may be wrong but I haven’t seen one without it.

If I can get the TRD-OR with a standard key that makes this whole thing moot. But as I’ve said I don’t think they offer this.

I’ll be doing all the install work. It’s electrics, especially modern stuff that I’m light in. Plus the price difference between the two is about 3k so in the end it’s a wash at least with the locker. The fact that someone was able to install crawl control give me hope since that seems far more difficult than either of these two things.

And on a side note I do get a chuckle (not necessarily at you) for people who complain about something not being cost effective and then spending the same or more on bumpers roof racks etc.

If it makes you happy then it’s money well spent. That’s really the bottom line. Armor and big tires don’t give me the warm fuzzies, but mechanical rigs with levers and manual hubs do.

It’s always amazed me how they could go from the 7.3, which should be in the running for one of the best Diesel engines ever, to that heap of junk.

As far as Toyota, they’ve done the engineering and they sell all their cool stuff elsewhere (hilux, Prado, 70 series, 105 series etc). They’ve just decided to not sell them here. Disappointing.

I've read through this thread and I'm scratching my head. I'm going to echo a bunch of other people here. You are literally describing a non-premium TRD OR.

Just buy one of them. No push-button. (Only premium models have it) Lever-actuated 4wd. Locker. AND you're not trying to figure out electronics and making things jive.

Don't like CRAWL? Don't use it.

Don't like the scoop? Swap it with someone who does. There are plenty who do. Or just buy a new hood.

Want the two-tone SR5 cloth interior? Swap it in.

You obviously have the money and knowledge to do these things, but to buy a standard SR5 and start mechanically tearing it apart to make it into a TRDOR is, IMO, stupid. Your time is money as well and you've admitted yourself that your electrical knowledge on these newer vehicles is "light"

Unless you just want to do this so you can create a "look what I did" thread?

If the OR comes with a standard key then that settles things. Problem is that I’ve been told only the SR5 has the standard key, and neither the Toyota website or anything I’ve seen online or in person says any different.

If you or someone else here has a standard OR with the regular key I’d like to know because that’s exactly what I’m looking for.

I have a 2017 TRD-OR standard, it has a physical key. Not sure about the newer model years, though.
