Classic.
What's funny is that car manufacturers have been putting those passive RF chips inside of keys for like the last 25-30 years or more, but apparently OP wasn't aware of that... otherwise you'd just be able to go copy your car keys at Lowe's or Wal-mart. Lol

Probably. Toyota has been doing regional packages like that for years. I believe the 4th gen had the XP and the new ones have the XP gunner or something like that available in the south. Like I said before, the website didn't give KDSS as an option in NY for the first couple years after the refresh (14-15).

Hopefully OP calls that dealer in WI and grabs that white OR

Having driven 4x4 vehicles for the past 25 years I have yet to gripe because I had to pull a lever to get in to 4wd. I have, however, had many experiences being frustrated by an electronic transfer case not engaging, especially 4lo, unless the stars were perfectly aligned and I took it out to dinner first. And I have had three failures from electronic transfer cases, (1 jeep 2 fords), which left me stranded.

On top of the added complexity these new technologies tend to add to the price of the vehicle, a hundred here, a hundred there, it adds up. Even though I prefer to be even more analog I bought my 19 specifically because it was the last year before push button starts and the other added electronics.

I feel like myself and OP would be happiest with a 70 series landcruiser while others would be happier with a Lexus 570. I'm just glad we still have some choice to both be happy.
I'm for simple, too. My 1988 4R was a good example - the only thing power on it was the rear window, and you knew you were in 4WD because you pulled the lever there. Unless you forgot to lock the manual hubs, lol.

Good observation. In point of this, Toyota has openly stated that one objective of the TGNA initiative was to reduce the insane number of permutations they already have.

I could see a scenario where you're a fishing guide or surf instructor or something like that where ruining an OEM fob on a regular basis would get really old really fast. Mostly because it's expensive. And it is kind of a PITA to use the mini-key in the fob to open the doors. But the concern about a one-time fob failure isn't much of an issue.

It won't be long before they physical key is totally gone and it's just cell phone or key pad. My old fj40 doesn't have a key. Just a push button start with a code.

I'm kinda indifferent to push button start. Generally I'd prefer it. I do hate some of the electronic "advances" though. Like the dial shifter on the Ram trucks. It's so damn frustrating trying to do anything trailer related - like backing up a trailer in tight spots. As soon as you open the door or lean out the window - the fawking thing will shift its self into park and apply the parking brake. And you can't intuitively reach down and change gears with it because it moves its self - so you don't ever really know what position it is when you start.
