Fox 2.5 Rear Remote Reservoir Overkill?

Hey,

I am close to pulling the trigger for my SR5 14'runner and was really leaning towards the 2.5's from Fox. I noticed that a few of the 4runners on here run 2.5 in front and 2.5 w/ remote reservoir in the rear. Is this common?

I get that the RR has better heat dissipation, more oil displacement so overall better for offroading but would it be overkill?

I feel like the 2.0 will suffice but I would much rather have the 2.5 for longevity, but the 2.5 rear only come with the RR if I am correct.

Just curious in other peoples thought about having RR in the rear only. I could always add the RR to the front 2.5's when I need the extra oil but I am not planning on hitting desert whoops for an extended time.

But then again im not planning on jumping the 4runner either! haha

Personally I think you should go 2.5s regardless as the increased dampening is great for even street driving, as for reservoirs unless you plan on running your rig hard they’d just be considered ‘bling’…. I don’t think running just rear reservoirs would make a difference you should be fine, I’d be curious to know if I’m wrong on this

You should definitely get the 2.5's and if you can swing it get the RR. From what I've heard the Fox 2.0 are really entry level stuff and the front coilover still requires you to remove it to adjust it. At minimum get the 2.5's.

I had the 2.0 and now the 2.5 RR.

I’d equate the 2.0 to over priced Bilsteins or on par with Eibach Pro. It’s better than stock but it has limitations.

Only reason I got RR is because I got a killer deal on them. But there’s been a few times I’ve actually gotten the RR warm to the touch so I’m glad I had the extra oil.

I have 2.5’s w/ DSC front and rear, I have had them for approaching 6 years and low miles, 40k, they are great shocks. So I had the fronts a year before the rears, this certainly made it most noticeable, the stock rears wouldn’t dampen anywhere near as evenly as the fronts. If you drive faster than crawling you’ll feel the difference off road and on. The way the shock dampens is crazy good.

I have two small regrets, when I bought these, not many others had so there was little useful knowledge out there and I relied on what little info there was.

First buy tundra rears, I don’t know the model number but with the 4runner rears you can only go up to 1.5 inches of lift, the tundras you can take to 3”.

Second the DSC resi’s are nice for sure and you certainly notice the difference when you adjust from full range top to bottom or vice versa but if you don’t adjust them much, maybe consider the simpler single adjustment reservoir. The DSC dials get mucked up pretty easily and the O rings that keep the muck out of the gap between the adjustment shaft and the housing don’t last, are a pain to find good replacements and allow crap to build up making adjustments a PITA.

EDIT: just want to add the any progressive dampening high end shock you buy is going to be a joy to drive, not just FOX but the are others too. Note these are rebuildable and expect you will have to get them rebuilt eventually (between 5k and 60k depending on how and where you drive) and it costs a few hundred bucks to get done or the tools you need to do it yourself.
