High Performance Coil Packs from Runnin' for Tacos?

Has anybody tried these?? I'm sort of expecting a number of comments like "Snake Oil! Don't do it" etc. but maybe not.

I'm interested because I go way back to my 69 Z/28 that I built in 1982. One of the quickest ways to get those motors to run better was to put in an Accel Super Coil, better Plug Wires, etc.

So, that said, IF these are a quality product and really put out the increased voltage they claim, I'd think they would generate some better spark energy, which *MIGHT result in a bit more power and economy.

If you' tried them and have experience, that would be great! If you are a Toyota Mechanic and think this is a bad idea (not saying it is or isn't), why do you think so?

Thanks!

Snake oil. The reason you experienced an improvement in your 69 is because the original parts were junk.

Ok, I will bite. The description provided of the product is definitely misleading. “Weak spark”, “poor performance”, none of this is true, the coils do their job and quite well. There is adequate spark to start the combustion process. If there was an issue resulting in an incomplete burn of fuel a check engine light would be set. I am no engineer but would speculate any performance gain if any would be minimal.

Moving past my speculation I will talk real world experience . I have had many vehicles come through my bay (Lexus Dealership) that have the check engine light on. On investigation I have found the customer had opted for aftermarket coils after seeing the price of oem. Replacing the coils with oem has been the fix many times. Oem is going to be the way to go.

But hey maybe these guys are onto something. If you try it let us know!

Plenty of 1K horsepower LS engines using OEM coils. Do you think OEM Toyota is somehow worse?

Of course not.

That said, do you think every single part Toyota makes is absolutely perfect and there is no room for improvement, ever?

Thank you for your perspective. You are probably right and I appreciate that you speak from experience.

At the same time, I wonder if comparing these to low price coils someone bought to save money is a fair comparison.

I'd love to see someone with real experience with these particular coils chime in if they are out there.

The reason everyone is looking for power in these trucks is because they are tuned for gas mileage from the factory. In the case of an ignition coil, a sub standard oem part could leave unburnt fuel in the combustion process. I feel like Toyota would optimize the coils to get the best ignition possible from the spark plugs to ensure the best mileage possible.

Modern cars have pretty hot ignitions for this purpose. I remember putting the newer HEI distributors on my Chevy small block builds because they were cheap, could be found everywhere, and had a spark that was vastly improved over the seperate coil with points distributors in the previous generations.

The next big improvement was having a coil for each cylinder which is obviously what the 4Runner has today.
The 1GR-FE in our 5th gens has 10.4 to 1 compression with the Dual VVT-i to allow it to run on any octane fuel efficiently. So I would guess the coils are pretty hot right from the factory.
These guys could very well be on to something but it's hard to say without a lot of expensive testing to gather the data needed to compare.

I’ve got those coils packs for ~15k on my 4Runner and here’s my real world experience. Quality of this coils packs: I would say same as OEM or better, no issues at all. Performance: If you looking to solve lack of power in your 4Runner, most likely you will be disappointed just because there is no way anybody can feel those gains (13HP) with their bud dyno.Fuel economy: It could be some improvement but mostly it depends on your driving habits. Ok bottom line, if you want to upgrade your OEM coils packs just for those gains, I wouldn’t do it, if your coils packs have to be replaced as maintenance then you can definitely get those, just because they are chipper and like I said , Quality and performance in my honest opinion is better than OEM coils packs. BTW guys that 4Runner on YT video was the first one those coil packs were installed and it’s my truck.

Well, they can't keep them in stock apparently. I've been trying to add a little power here and there to help offset the extra weight I've added to mine. Aftermarket air filter, TRD exhaust, etc.. Have been considering this as well, but they never seem to be in stock.

I have the Pedal Commander as well to improve throttle response, but it doesn't actually increase power.
