Making a "street" 4Runner would have made just the slightest bit more sense if it carried over the AWD system from the Limited. Really, most people would benefit from the AWD system anyway, and it would be great if it was offered in a deblinged version of the 4Runner.

Or they could have made it exclusively RWD. For the street.

Then yes, it can be geared down to 4lo. There’s nothing incorrect about the info ive provided, but I did overlook 4HI.
You are quite simply not familiar with the vehicle at all nor are you reading what I'm saying. There IS a two speed transfer case.

You can have 4 HI locked center diff and 4 LO locked center diff. You can also have all wheel drive mode (that's the default daily driver mode without the center diff locked). Locking the center diff does most certainly not put you automatically in 4 wheel LO.

I am totally fine with it being the “Ford Edge Sport” equivalent with body color keyed trim instead of chrome, but where are my 22” wheels???

Hey man, I love talking about vehicles and I dont mind being wrong, no need to get aggressive. The limited drives power to all 4 wheels through the center differential. When locking that center diff, I go into 4HI. I think youve taken something ive said to suggest that you automatically go into 4lo when you lock the center diff, and let me take that back. You go into 4HI. Where we may disagree however, is that the limited accomplishes its 4WD by locking the center diff. All other 4runners do this with the transfer case. They behave very similarly, but they are not the same thing. No other 4runners of this gen even have a center diff - they have the transfer case. This info is, I thought, pretty easy to find. Again, happy to keep discussing, and man, if I need to learn a lot, so be it. Lets try to actually learn from one another instead of just open hand slapping though.

Hope this means I can replace as many chrome bits with TRD Sport color-keyed ones as possible on my Ltd. Are grills parts, door handles, rocker panels, etc. able to be ordered by factory color like this?

Maybe to help clear the air. I think the most accurate way to refer to the Limited 4WD system rather than just saying center diff or transfer case is to say it’s a transfer case with a center diff. The center diff is what allows for full-time 4WD because it allows for a “difference” between front and back. But it most certainly contains a transfer case which happens to also contain the diff.

I think the biggest issue jp.vegas had was in your original post you said, “Limited doesnt have a two speed transfer case, you just lock the center differential to engage 4lo.” Whether that reads the way you meant it or not, it reads incorrectly. It does have a two speed transfer case. It has 4hi and 4low. True, locking the diff allows for it to be in true 4WD mode by locking the front and back together, but there are two speeds.

Now, back on topic, I think the TRD Sport may have the Limited 4WD system. Car and Drivers article on it clearly reads that way. Until we get more from Toyota, I don’t think we’ll be sure. Unless I missed a pic somewhere showing the transfer case knob?

I mean I bought our TRD Offroad and it's only been offroad a handful of times. I could see throwing some gears and a Maggie blower on this thing and having a fun DD for the wife.

I like options.

That’s what you said. All I said is that’s wrong. If you misspoke, so be it, but I’m not a mind reader.

yep, i shoulda said 4HI, and thank you for the input. I definitely misspoke. the original question was relating this this TRD sport being the same as the limited, and i tried to point out the differences, and obviously failed at my first attempt. I also got it wrong in that the limited also has a two-speed transfer case, its just a different setup than the sr5s in implementation, and I blew it on explaining that. thanks for your time.

yup, i misspoke there and JP and you are both correct. my bad, and thanks for the patient answer. I understand that the center diff is what allows for full-time AWD on the limited. Its also my understanding its the transfer case which allows for the power to be distributed to the rear while the front spins freely (on the other 4runners). so the way these two accomplish this, while very similar in outcome is quite different in execution. It is in fact the function of the transfer case to drive power to all 4 wheels, rather than the center diff, and that distinction is a big one in this context. that was my point. Where I also blew it, was being completely wrong about the limited not having a two-speed transfer case at all (4HI, 4LO), so again, thank you both.

regarding the question about the limiteds AWD/4WD system, here's where I got myself into trouble, so I'll drop this link here, and try to answer more correctly:

Toyota 4Runner TRD Sport Added to Lineup for 2022 Model Year - Toyota USA Newsroom

"TRD Sport is available in 2WD or part-time 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case. "

It looks like this new TRD sport features a part-time 4wd system (so that of the sr5, etc) with a two speed transfer case, rather than the limiteds full-time AWD system, with two speed transfer case.

TRD Sport doesn’t necessarily mean cheap watered down TRD Pro, or even that it’s an “in betweener” to fill a gap between trims. They already have plenty.

Toyota RACING Development can mean street performance, too. What do you think the 22” TRD wheels for the late 2000’s Tundra were for? Off roading?

i see this as pretty much a more road-friendly sr5. in that context, I think there's plenty of market for it. its not like it cost them any extra to develop, and the've made it with parts from a bin that is now very old, heh.

also, there was a small, very niche, but enthusiastic market for that tacoma X-runner. this isnt all that different. i doubt they plan on making a ton of these, but who knows?

X-Runner was a great design! I wasn’t into Toyotas at the time my local dealer had one, I was into Jeeps as a young man, but that would make a good practical sporty truck today.

The X-Runner is a great comparison. So is the current generation Tundra TRD Sport.

SR5+ or Limited- both end up in the same place.

With the current shortage of just about any 4Runner in any trim, I'm sure they'll sell every one they produce.

I mean I live in Ohio so not close to alot of great offroading. Our TRD OR has rarely been offroad. We will be living on 5 acres with back roads so 4wd is nice. An Xrunner would be super cool. I don't love other midsize options and have a camper to tow.

I get this trim level even if others don't.
