Its also my understanding its the transfer case which allows for the power to be distributed to the rear while the front spins freely (on the other 4runners). so the way these two accomplish this, while very similar in outcome is quite different in execution. It is in fact the function of the transfer case to drive power to all 4 wheels, rather than the center diff, and that distinction is a big one in this context. that was my point. Where I also blew it, was being completely wrong about the limited not having a two-speed transfer case at all (4HI, 4LO), so again, thank you both.

regarding the question about the limiteds AWD/4WD system, here's where I got myself into trouble, so I'll drop this link here, and try to answer more correctly:

Toyota 4Runner TRD Sport Added to Lineup for 2022 Model Year - Toyota USA Newsroom

"TRD Sport is available in 2WD or part-time 4WD with a 2-speed transfer case. "

It looks like this new TRD sport features a part-time 4wd system (so that of the sr5, etc) with a two speed transfer case, rather than the limiteds full-time AWD system, with two speed transfer case.
Thanks for the link to Toyota and the part time 4WD reference. That’s unfortunate to see. I think it would have been a nice trim level to have full time 4WD… I know my wife would have liked that but we don’t care for the limited… nor it’s price… Will be looking for something else for her…

I agree. A true “stripped down” limited. I love the 4runner in all its trims, (maybe not this one as much as the others), but I have to admit, they’re all quite expensive - Limited especially.

No question. this gen 4runner is the closest thing to an investment opportunity you’ll find in the auto market, hah.

And it’s not a bad thing to say either. There’s sure fire money in flipping TRD Pro, same as C8 corvette, and a few others. Lower end Rolexes, even.

Exploiting inefficiencies in the market is a skill, and you can call it what you want, investment or not, very short term. But there’s no doubt it can make people money!

Or they could have made it exclusively RWD. For the street.
Lots of unjustified criticism in this thread.
Toyota should of done this years ago,the front end of the current generation is a little weird.
The sport front end tones down the limited and makes it more balanced in appearance .
Nice job toyota
